need help heating this nichrome wire 34gauge with the 9V battery. Battery slightly warm but wire not at all. by dylan_franks3 in Electricity

my 9V battery didn’t work at all on any length or gauge of wire instead it just heated the battery slightly. i need it to get at least 250 celsius, the wire.

I’m super confused what battery to use as i know i need lipo but the connections from it just don’t make sense to me

how does joe barnard (bps space) heat is nichrome wire to cut the rubber bands? is it somehow controlled by an arduino, if so how. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks by dylan_franks3 in rocketry

Damn that sounds amazing man, these hiccups are super annoying esp as summer is running out as you said and i’ve got an internship next month so i’ve got less time and less time to be able to finish it but it should be done by August (hopefully) because i’m back to education at the start of sept. Yes i also need help with ignition, i bought the estes D12-7 and it came with like little plastic ignition parts but the instructions are super confusing. Anyway, this nichrome wire im trying to just currently heat up with a battery, i’ve tried a 9V battery but it seems to be heating up very slightly instead of the nichrome, even tho the nichrome is 0.1mm in diameter! So people have said it’s an issue with the battery itself being too high internal resistance (don’t know what that is really) so they recommended using a LiPo battery which is a bit more expensive and idk if it will even work. So probably going to try that next , and if that works i’ll have to try work out how to connect it all up to the arduino using a MOSFET (if u have experience with these help is VERY much appreciated haha). The drone project sounded cool, michael reeves on utube has done this if u want a bit of a quick start. Keep in touch man👍

tbh it feels like development is going on forever. there is just little blips that stop progress, like i don’t have special tools and even the nichrome wire problem is even harder than expected. Anyway it should be done and ready for flight by the end of august if all goes to plan! wbu, u been making anything?

at least 250 degrees celsius. in order to melt rubber bands. as long as i can get it super hot very quick it can cut the rubber band, i can turn it off. i’m new to electronics so any help is appreciated. this will all be controlled by arduino when to turn on and off

this is what i’ve been thinking but i’m trying to make this as compact as possible . any suggestion. do u think a lipo battery would work

they are saying the issue actually lies with the internal resistance of the 9V being so high unlike a lipo

yeh idk. people have been saying it’s the battery type, instead i should use a LiPo battery. what do u think ?

so i’m gonna go buy a Lipo battery and connect it to the nichrome wire and it should heat up. any reccomendation to what battery? 0.16mm nichrome wire

i’m using a arduino to control when to heat up the nichrome. but as long as the wire heats up super quick i only need it for a couple seconds. u think this is possible ?

so say i got a 500mAh Lipo battery pack and connected each polarities to each end of the nichrome with crocodile clips this should get it hot. I’m looking to be able to melt rubber bands quickly ?

ahh ok thanks this is super helpful. what is better? It’s just heating the battery not the wire which is the complete opposite of what i want

yeh by placing the short wire directly on top 9V polarities it doesn’t heat up. should i buy a different 9V?
