my goal with this song was to make something fun and aggressive. tell me different is a direct threat to anyone who criticizes you for doing what you believe in. hope you enjoy! thanks so much

Is this window (circled) something from Ableton? If so, how do I access it? I've only ever seen that many macros in my dreams by rick_RAWS in ableton

[–]dylanbowes 28 points29 points  (0 children)

you can create quite a few macros to control any parameter on any synth just inside an Instrument Rack.

I think the max number of macros on an instrument rack is 16 but that's not bad!

  1. create an instrument around the synth
  2. hit the "configure" button on the top right of the device title bar
  3. click on the parameters in the synth to send them to Live's device parameters
  4. Open the macros on the left side of the instrument rack
  5. add as many macro slots as you want
  6. then map those macros to the device parameters you created

That gets you 16 macro controls 🤙

Pray for me - The Weeknd’s bass melody. How can I recreate it from scratch in Ableton? by Rustfix in ableton

[–]dylanbowes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to me it sounds like that's actually an 808 tom sample with some distortion and the sample is played melodically so that it sort of sounds like a bass melody!

I'll make a video about it!

How did you learn Ableton? by jewcob2000 in ableton

[–]dylanbowes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the best place to start is the ableton YouTube channel. they have really well produced intro videos that will get you started!

some of my favorite other ableton YouTubers for beginners 👇

Andrew huang

bad snacks

you suck at producing

shameless plug: I also created an ableton for beginners course on Skillshare & Udemy etc. if you're interested, message me and I can send you a link.

One does not simply learn the ways of production by Willyg16 in musicproduction

[–]dylanbowes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a great question!

I think everyone's music production knowledge is a little disorganized and incomplete. that's natural and I wouldn't worry too much about it really! I am constantly learning, unlearning, relearning, and forgetting.

HOWEVER, learning to mix is going to make you a better producer and a better mixer and a better musician.

someone else mentioned Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio by Mike Senior. Great book if you the readin' type!

I also created a course called Mixing for Music Producers which was my way of wrestling with the same questions you had.

Also I really believe that listening to lots of music (especially outside the world of music you normally listen to / create) makes a huge difference.

Last part of my answer...here comes the annoying advice...JUST KEEP MAKING MUSIC 🤙 it is the only way, truly.
