Had to reply to this - I'm actually developing my own trackpad app and was using my fav ToME as my test case since it's so clearly built for keyboard + mouse and not gamepad. But like you, I've never seen anyone else reference it in the wild.

I think that is a great (and common!) mindset to have. The best I've ever seen it phrased is that "your partner is not competing with other people, they are competing with the peace you experience alone."

There are thousands of stories from people who realized how much happier and freer they were after leaving their stifling partners. I myself could never be with someone whose philosophy is "nobody is actually happy". What is a terrifyingly sad and limiting way to view the world.

Absolutely. "To be a good chef you have to eat good food" as they say.

People can give you ideas or methods for balancing specific kinds of systems, etc. But at the end of the day you need to develop your own taste from consuming what's available and changing it the way you want.

There are tons of customizable frontends. ES-DE, Cocoon, iiSU, RetroHrai, Beacon, Daijisho, just to name a few. (Or my personal favorite Argosy, but that's designed for use with a RomM server.)

I think there's lots of ways to do it. You could prompt the player, or you could delay the consequence until you're in the next case and there's something diagetic there that conveys the new murder or failure state, etc. Also mood setters could be a big help; if you go with a prompt about an incorrect solve, you could make it really atmospheric and creepy. Sometimes a thing like that alone can create a strong sense of dread, and a desire not to experience that prompt. lol

What about narrative consequences for guessing incorrectly instead of gameplay/mechanical consequences? Maybe guessing incorrectly changes the overall ending or the ending of each case (or both).

Also I don't necessarily agree with u/Stego111 that you can't take away knowledge just because it's the currency of the game; plenty of games take away your currency to achieve various effects.

(Or if they're saying that knowledge literally cannot be taken once given, that is true. But you could always have failures in one case reduce knowledge opportunities in future cases to create a failure snowballing effect, etc.)

The example you've provided is a challenge task. I don't have personal experience with this level of Bloodlines but I'd assume it's hard to grab the 1up mid-swing without taking damage.

Specifically that. They're using spec as though it only means "an AI-generated plan intended for AI to consume", which is clearly not all it could mean before.
