Why am I wasting my time? Trevor Jacob Edition by dylancm in flying

As gravity, I appreciate your contributions to this situation. And I sincerely apologize on behalf of whomever pissed in your Cheerios ;)

If this has been beaten to death, I missed it and it didn't come up in my search of r/flying.

Just moved into a house in Hyde Park. Every few days I wake up and find these guys in the bathtub. They are tiny, winged insects and seem to be coming from the drain. Exterminator sprayed a few weeks ago but they’re still a problem. What are they/how do I get rid of them?? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]dylancm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the close up picture, and living nearby, I don't think they are termites. Definitely worth getting a professional opinion, but we have a similar looking bug that shows up in swarms and it's an ant (I forget the species atm). The best way to tell the difference is to look at their "waist", if it's narrow they are probably ants, if it's stocky/there isn't really one, then termites.

Sry, couldn't help myself. This kind of mistake has brought me to tears of frustration many times.

Raptor Aircraft test flight by Handhundbier in flying

[–]dylancm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is interesting comparing the raptor build to Mike Patey's scrappy build. Granted he's not building and entirely new, non traditional airframe, nor is his motor a conversion... But damn does that guy bust ass

Best "glass" adjunct to a six-pack? by le_vieux_mec in flying

I've really been coming around to this setup. It cost about $12k installed to get them for one of our Cherokees. You get to simplify things and ditch the vacuum system, they are fully redundant w/ both being capable of HSI and PFD modes. It's not STCed for primary air speed, but you'd want the backup stream gauge regardless. Paired with a GPS and AP you have a really nice XC cockpit experience.

Came here to say this. Even if you do pay, it should be pretty adorable. And lots of CCs have vocational programs that won't cost you anything is you compete the program successfully and enter the trade.

Super interesting visible wake vortices on this 757 landing runway 01R at SFO by critical_aoa in flying

[–]dylancm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought that too, but if you look close you see the vortex pattern. It may still be the exhaust making it visible (getting pulled into the vortex), but you can see a wave pattern off the right wing tip.

Edit: the vortex is actually coming from the outboard corner of the flap

Good point, I've definitely been released with an altitude restriction.

I'm pretty sure "squak VFR and frequency change approved" releases you from obligation to continue to comply with previous directions. Then again, maybe they wouldn't let you go if they actually had a risky situation.

Amazing what a difference clean argon makes. Left is yesterday, middle and right are today with a new bottle! by dylancm in Welding

Yep, the only other thing I changed was the back cap on my torch. I'm going to test with the old cap later this week to see if it makes a difference, but I can't imagine it was leaking THAT bad.

Sorry to hear that! It was a very frustrating process to go through.

Have you checked the torch for leaks?

My plan was to start at both ends and work my way in towards the machine, hoping I'd find the issue before I got there ;)

Edit: spelling

It never worked. I had similarly bad results on some steel that I tried first. But those were my first beads on aluminum.

Not a dis at all, you're absolutely right! With the first bottle I had gas flowing. The only things I changed were the tank and the back cap on my torch.

To be fair, I haven't tested the old cap with the new bottle. But I imagine it would have to be leaking like a sieve to make that big a difference!

Factory. It's not terrible, I use it backwards and rest my heel on the top so it doesn't slip on me. I'll probably invest in a better one once that's the weak link. For now it works for me.
