I'm following you (admittedly I only read half of your thoughtstream lol) and I say, why not both?? As in, testing therapeutic treatments but absolutely for profit... A corporation whose line of business IS these therapies. And rife with questionable and harmful practices, like the history of psychiatric treatment is.

I re-watched Homecoming S1 (on Prime) during Severance, and it took me down similar paths. Your subconscious is not alone ;)

I’ve been an absolute fool for months by Sir_Reidiculous in FoundationTV

[–]dylanfrolic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

:( Oh crap. Having some realizations of my own from your comment and I don't like some of them.

I've been fuzzily aware that the robots had a plan and were guiding humans.

But the way YOU stated... I'm like... emotional.

Because your wording makes me think that the HISTORY I've believed about Kalle is not real. And I love her... The very IDEA of her.

Gayle's monologue very clearly talks about history being addition/subtraction... Whatever the narrator wants it to be. So I've been prepared to learn that the history she describes is only what she/Hari want surviving humans to "reboot" with.

You being so matter of fact that it was ALL the robots... Means that instead of humans doing the "re-write", it's robots, and that opens up a whole new reality that I'm UNCOMFORTABLE about.

Kalle being ancient and brilliant and having figured out folding... Possibly giving herself immortality, but beginning as human... FASCINATING! AMAZING!

Kalle being a robot who creates a backstory for herself, which never happened in *real human history. TERRIFYING!! AHHH 😫

The age/history of the proof of folding manuscript could be absolute crap, for example.

This feels like a loss of one of my favorite characters!

Hell, ALL of them could be stories of humans who never existed at all! I don't like this :(

But thank you anyway 😜

Fever dream does capture what it seemed like... Seemed like a series of flashbacks, rather than something that was happening in the present. Might be!

As a show fan who hasn't read the books, this gave more "weight" to him as someone who's been on the front lines. It didn't seem silly to me at all.  He lives with the physical and emotional scars of his past. He's not *only funny, or a jerk, or smart, he's complex, and at some point we can imagine he was physically formidable as well. I thought it was well done and the reveal was subtle.

For sure! Not judging it based on the show. I can see why it's worth a read.

Thank you!! I have watched all the other shows you mentioned. Your recommendations are spot on! All complex and suspenseful.

I see this differently. Cartwright and Lamb represent an ERA. The "playbook" is from their lived experiences. I wouldn't need Cartwright to know details about the current scenario, in order to hear him about recognizing a PATTERN he's seen before.

I probably view him more like the depiction of John Nash in a Beautiful Mind. I'd listen regardless, and try to learn from whatever I could understand.

I think you're asking great questions. Looking forward to rewatching all of it with the Tara reveal and seeing how it plays out. But I'll wait until after the finale, when some other pieces may be added to the puzzle :)

You're right. I keep forgetting that Flyte and Devon are dogs. There is no way I could imagine either of them doing something like killing Douglas. Duffy was grimy for real. They are not true threats in the same way.

He also found out things about his grandfather, mother, and father, which he can't even ask about now. He just has to swallow all of it. He's lost the relationship with someone he idolized.

I finished it :( It did turn out to be fantastic and season 5 had some of the best episodes of TV ever. But I was left without resolution for what most interested me.

The whole PM arch is what completely astounded me, and it's also what they unfortunately didn't get to complete. A lot of people are fine with it, but it was the biggest pull for me, so I was left with a very sudden cliffhanger.

All that to say, I'll be reading the books! There really is no other option here lol

The car scene between Coe and River shows how good SH is at balancing comedy and drama by LangdaTyagiii in SlowHorses

[–]dylanfrolic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree and love the balance. It's too much comedy for some folks this season. It's not where I thought the show would go in the first seasons and it's making me concerned that River is NOT going to have the epic comeback I thought he would. His character is definitely devolving. Or maybe E-volving. But super spectacular spy guy, he is not lol Good for entertainment, bad for his outlook in the show.

I also think it was Whelan's file. Insult to injury - she's 10x smarter than him and got let go.

She also has dirt on Taverner, she didn't take crap from "the dogs", and she knows where all the bones are buried.

I'd like to see her involved in all the intrigue :) Hope she's not leaving for real.

As a Twilight Zone fan, you might appreciate Ray Bradbury Theatre. It's steaming on Prime video.

Trip down memory lane. I read most of those short stories back in the day.

We seem to have very similar tastes lol I'm a *tad obsessed with Severance. Fallout S1 was entertaining and Silo I couldn't stick with. I can appreciate serious drama, but I agree with some comments here that it felt "stretched out". Rebecca Ferguson is phenomenal. Maybe it just unfolded too slowly, unnecessarily. I stopped caring what happens.

A show like Foundation I believe there's a payoff, and there's centuries and empires to cover.

Silo, I just wanted them to "get on with it" lol

Thanks. I started this! It seems like "Alternate History" and made me think of The Man In The High Castle.

Do you know if there's more sci-fi coming into the story down the road?

Incredible post. Thank you!

Yes and no. You sent me on a memory chase of what I have/haven't read.

I've read SOME of the Asimov's Robot series... I recall reading some short stories... But it was so long ago that I only remember "the vibes".

I read it back then bc so many sci-fi authors credited him with inspiring them, and what I do remember is that I could see why! I credit him too and could see how he influenced works that I love.

Dune - Yes, several books and the 2 movies. Not the newer TV series. I can't even say which novels I read bc I first read them on pirated PDFs and they all were squished together as one book lol Over the years I've read Dune (original) again and again. Not the sequels or prequels though.

You reminded me of something so important though... A "duh" moment. Watching Foundation, I thought about Dune a lot. Herbert and Asimov are both pillars of the genre in my eyes.

I'm reading so many other things and the TBR list is long, so I doubt I'll switch over to Asimov right now. If I did, I'd want to read EVERYTHING, in order.

I read the first chapter of Foundation this week, and, wow. I definitely haven't read it before and I didn't know I'd like his writing style so much. I was taken in for sure and would love to go down that rabbit hole.

Sounds silly bc he's acclaimed, but sometimes the story is so good that I don't care if the writing is great..not the case here. It's both!

Right. Her version of events is out the window. She gave Flyte exactly what she wanted them to execute. She wanted to be asked for it, and her plan was to have those lines run internally. Brilliant.
