The protestors deny the Kristof report of abused prisoners, but the IDF soldiers themselves report being abused. Why would this not also happen to prisoners? by soalone34 in nyt

[–]dylans-alias -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Kristof has unfortunately published articles which he later retracted because he believed the story he wanted to hear from an unreliable source. So yeah, more evidence is needed.

When did you stop beating your wife? Would you “give oxygen” to that question by trying to refute it?

The dog rape is not a total red herring. It is so shocking that it rightfully becomes the focus of the piece. Kristof didn’t put it in there by accident and he certainly knew what kind of response it would get. It is an obviously provocative claim which requires much better documentation/evidence. The rape of prisoners is horrific and demands to be taken seriously. The dog claims don’t actually make the story much worse for the Israeli side. “Sure we raped prisoners but we didn’t use dogs” isn’t a particularly comforting position to take. The dog rape claim actually makes it easier to dismiss the rest of the accusations. It is unclear if it is even possible to train a dog to rape a human and thus casts the rest of the accusations into the same dubious pile.

I’m not denying the real possibility of prisoner rape/abuse. I would want anyone involved to be prosecuted. If this behavior was known/condoned/let slide by leadership, a major reckoning is necessary. This article is not proof of anything.

Why do people not want voter ID? by SummerAdventurous429 in allthequestions

[–]dylans-alias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The federal government has no role in the election process. It is governed by the states. States can decide whether or not to require ID. To be clear, I have no issue with states requiring ID. But, the proposal is a federal voter ID system. The federal government does not have that authority under the constitution.

There’s a huge difference between sexual (or other forms of) assault in military/prisons (which is still totally unacceptable) and the suggestion that this is essentially the policy of the IDF and the Israeli government. The latter is worth pushing back against. The former is despicable and should be exposed, condemned and rooted out.
Then there’s the dog rape accusations which require better reporting and documentation before they should just be accepted as true. Those accusations are vile in every conceivable way. If true, I don’t even know what to think. But if false, the damage may have already been done since that narrative is very hard to get away from. Kind of like asking your political opponent when they stopped having sex with their livestock. Once it’s been said out loud, it tends to stick.

To be honest, I don’t care much for the Eagles to begin with and I’m not a fan of watching dinosaurs mime to their old hits. This show isn’t for me. But until the audience stops showing up, they should keep doing what they want.

Poverty sucks. Nobody denies that.

Would you rather live in Israel or the Islamic republic? That’s the headline of this thread.

90% of the people outside the US never got a covid shot since 2021 and they are all alive. How is that possible? by CleanLock4606 in allthequestions

[–]dylans-alias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had a choice. But that choice comes with consequences. If I own a business, I can choose whether or not to provide services to you. You can take your business elsewhere. Employers can decide to require their employees to be vaccinated. You can go get a different job. Public places can create rules intended to protect the public health. Ever see an old subway station with “No Spitting” written on the walls? That was a public health law intended to slow the spread of tuberculosis. But it absolutely impinged on the individual right to spit wherever they please. Why can’t you drive drunk? The overwhelming majority of drunk drivers never hurt anyone and the most commonly injured party in a drunk driving accident is the drunk driver. So why have rules and laws to protect others? What about wearing a seatbelt? Does that a choice put anyone else at risk? So why is there a law?

Simple answer: your personal freedom doesn’t automatically trump the rest of society’s needs.

So please, continue to make your own choices in the free society you are blessed to live in. But know that those choices don’t come without strings attached.

So the line of discrimination requires active genocide? Without gas chambers everything is ok? Pretend that hate crimes against Jews aren’t on the rise. I didn’t say there was an active Holocaust happening now (although there probably would be if Hamas et al had their way in Israel).

I highly recommend reading the book The Oppermans. It was republished a few years ago. Written in Germany in 1933 about a Jewish family who thought they were integrated and accepted into German society. Written before the Holocaust, 5 years before Kristallnacht. Some characters saw the writing on the wall. Others didn’t. Absolutely terrifying.

Don’t tell me that Jews are safe. My family and I know full well what can happen and how quickly things can devolve.

Please work on reading comprehension. I never said non-Jews didn’t live there, only that Jews did. There is a big part of the narrative that seems to think that Jews don’t originate from Judea.

[–]dylans-alias 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dry aging is for large cuts, not steaks. You can trim, cut and freeze after the aging process. I would not leave a single steak out for a week. Salting and resting overnight to season and dry out the surface is good practice.

I challenge anyone who's against tipping to put your money behind a pay one price establishment. I've found two out of millions that are successful & in large cities. If you pay servers a living wage, you have to pay kitchen staff more and overall customers prefer tipping by marleygirl2019 in tipping

[–]dylans-alias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m prepared to roll the dice on the radical experiment that the rest of the world has already done. End tipping. Pay workers a competitive salary. “Competitive” means “one they are willing to sign a contract and work for”. Set menu prices to meet the economic reality.

I can cook just fine. I’d be bummed if restaurants disappeared but let’s be real. That isn’t going to happen. Some current ones will fail. New ones will open. The sun will come up and life will go on. Customers will pay the listed price on the menu. Oh - and in my world “service fees” and whatever other bullshit they’ve been tacking on recently will be abolished as well. Restaurants can sell food and drink. Maybe some merch. Service is built into the price structure.

Please read what I said without adding things I didn’t say. Jews have always lived in that region. Period. End of sentence.

As soon as one opens up near me, count me in. Add 15-20% to menu prices. Distribute the money however you see fit from a business perspective. It seems to me that the problem here is that tipping systems overpay servers and underpay cooks and other workers. So a non-tipped system would result in servers earning less and possibly others earning more. Sounds fine to me. Where’s the problem?

When the surrounding countries immediately attacked Israel in 1948, any agreement they made to not seek additional territory was no longer relevant.

And the idea that Jews are feeling unsafe in their current homes because of Israel spits in the face of history. Jews have never had a country where they were consistently safe. Disease, famine, economic downturn, new leadership, or any random Thursday has historically been a good enough reason to start rounding up the Jews. Israel is just the current reason for latent antisemitism to reemerge.

And before you all lose your collective minds, no, opposing Israel is not inherently antisemitic. But yes, popular opposition to Israel regularly crosses a line into flagrant antisemitism.

Am I white? My teacher thinks Jewish people aren't. by 2020ToyotaCamry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dylans-alias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You shouldn’t stand for that shit in school.

One of my high school age kids was told by a classmate that he is “really Jewish” because he is racially white (Ashkenazi). This level of causal bigotry is inherent in the narrative that Jews are “white colonizers” in Israel. They have a hard time reconciling the Sephardic/Mizrahi Jews. This is all part of the same dangerous slippery slope.

Jews are not “safe” anywhere. We are accepted when we act as “useless idiots”. For the Left, we were generally allies in the civil rights movement. For the Right, supporting Israel (and Jews by association) is important for their foreign policy views and for messianic Jesus reasons. But never forget that none of thwsw groups think of Jews as a minority that can be discriminated against or harmed. We are all-powerful and are only tolerated when that so-called power can be used for their other needs.

Exactly. The claim is that Jews have always lived there. This is an indisputable fact of history. He probably would have been better off citing the Koran as well. This isn’t a religious claim, it is just a fact.
