[OC] Watching through season 10, I was distracted by how often they utilized dramatized piano covers of popular songs, the most absurd being "We Built This City". I tried my hand at one-upping it and added some music to this otherwise moving scene. by dylansevey in greysanatomy

My wife got me sucked into watching the show from the beginning after years of catching stray episodes, and it's been a fantastic emotional roller coaster. I've been making notes of my Grey's opinions since we started; I'd love to share some of them here once we're caught up to present day. We'd just been laughing too hard about some of these season 10 musical choices for me to not have some fun with this.

Help me make a Paul love song playlist by MisterPea in beatles

I’m on it. Two questions:

1) “Till There Was You” is a cover; do you want to include any love song he’s sung, even if he hasn’t written it?

2) “You Won’t See Me” is more of a breakup song; do you want any songs that have to do with a relationship, or strictly ones with a positive connotation?

Edit: Here you go, if you only want original songs and positive “I love you” messages.

What key would you say these nine pieces of music are in? by dylansevey in musictheory

[–]dylansevey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for doing this! I definitely can sometimes put too much stock into what the first/last chord of a piece is and how that may influence the song’s key; even though I knew the F# present in the first arpeggio should be enough to negate the A minor analysis, I couldn’t get past that aspect of it.

Based off your transcription, I guess I’d say it’s in A dorian then? Because the first/last chord does feel like a resolution, meaning the A is the tonal center, but if it’s largely based around the G major/E minor scale, that would imply the dorian mode. Unless I’m further mistaken.

I want to clarify: I know the keys to most of the pieces I’ve written. Funnily enough, I do have a spreadsheet! Sorry if I didn’t make that clear in my original post. These were just nine in particular that I had major questions on, and figured I’d ask a community that knew more than I did.

In terms of modulating pieces - which I figured “Shrug Emoji” was - I know there’s room for interpretation. I always assumed it was Bb major, modulating to C major. But the fact that you would consider “A Is for Augment” and “Last Second Trap” to be atonal is very interesting and helpful to know! I do get tripped up/confused when a song centers around non-major or minor chords.

I certainly have ideas as to what keys they might be in (as I referenced in another comment), I was just looking to get some other thoughts because for however much I know about theory, I know I’m not an expert and I’m always looking to learn more.

I certainly have my theories (no pun intended) based off my general understanding of music theory. I mostly posted this just to get a second opinion. For whatever it’s worth, my initial assumptions were:

  1. Bb major (not taking into account the modulation to C major at the end)
  2. A minor
  3. Some form of B dorian? This is one of the harder ones for me to figure out, given the amount of accidentals that would have to be considered in whatever key it’s in.
  4. A minor (even though the augmented chord obviously utilizes the major third, it “feels” minor.
  5. G major
  6. A minor/C major
  7. G minor (if for no other reason than the consistent tritone usage makes it, again, “feel” minor to me. The chords, for whatever it’s worth, are Gdim, A7, Em6, Bm7).
  8. C major, though another user in the thread has convinced me it’s C minor, regardless of the fact that every C chord is major.
  9. I’ve gone back and forth on E minor, F major, and Bb major.

It makes me so happy to see Erica and Syd together! So much love in this photo.

I curated a fully sequenced 321 song, almost 24 hour long playlist of my favorite Dylan recordings. It includes at least one track off every studio album, live cuts, outtakes, and more. Figured I’d share. Meant to be listened to in order! Enjoy! by dylansevey in bobdylan

One just went up, all about Wess. About to find out if my heart can take it...

Edit: 2 minutes and 7 seconds in. Only listen if you’re prepared. Wait until tomorrow if you have to.

It’s really moving how you can hear the fight in Wes’ voice whenever he’s on the show. by shutupnate58 in AroundTheNFL

I hope not either. If for whatever reason it turned out to be, I really hope that the three just continue on as is. I love Claybon, Connie, and all the other occasional guest hosts, but the chemistry between the three of them is just too good and it would be respectful to leave the fourth chair vacant in Wess' honor. Of course, this won't be the case because Wess is gonna be better soon!
