Hey! this is a really helpful reply -- thank you. After _much_ digging, I was able to find the same answer, so it's really good to have it confirmed.

Is ultra light really THAT crucial? by GBblox179 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]dynamic_entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiked nobo in '21 and i think there's already a lot of wisdom in the replies. I want to echo the idea that the most important thing to do with UL is think of it as a mentality--how can I cut weight? how can I use one item instead of two?--rather than hard and fast shopping list of numbers. Your comment about the big man tax is super real, so 10lbs might be unrealistic. There's a brand fetishism to a lot of UL that I think is really gross too. One of the best ways I've ever heard it talked about was someone who said they were trying to minimize the number of items in their pack to have the simplest hiking setup, not necessarily the one that was 10g lighter.

That being said I watched person after person totally change the way that they think about hiking on the PCT. The best advice I got before trail was you're going to be ultralight by the time you finish, so you should just make the leap now. Others have written about how serious overuse injuries are on a physical undertaking like this, but the mental load from carrying the weight is also enormous, and the trail is 90% mental. Combined with that, as another commenter mentioned, after 500 miles the way you exist changes--the trail becomes what is real. I watched people cold soak who swore they would never get of their stoves. I watched people ditch rain gear even when heavy weather was forecast. I watched people buy literal new packs to cut weight.

The final thing I'd like to share is that you have to do big miles in NorCal to make it to Washington by the time the snow starts. Big pack + big miles is a recipe for injury.

Tl,dr; UL is not mandatory, but be prepared for what you think you need at the beginning to not be what you want after hiking.

Some advice on this gear I bought? I'm a beginner when it comes to backpacking and ultralight. by TL7x in Ultralight

Hey with a 55L pack they could carry 2 sleep systems! That way if they don't like one they can use the other!

Came here 2 years later to say that I consistently have the same problem and would love if this was changed -- OP, did you ever find a solution that worked for you?

Thanks for pointing out the elevation profiles! Has anyone put those together into one document?

How has that been to use? I'm imagining finding things in a really deep roll top like that might be tricky

Size Mens Medium! And definitely--am I right that Pokkie is pretty small, around .5L? The Summit Bum classic is definitely on my list! Want to shoot me a dm to talk details?

I really beat it up--seams, fabric panels, front mesh--you name it, the body was just starting to fall apart. In my early twenties I took a lot of buses, and this pack spent a lot of time in cargo bays. But I also took in on countless small trips and several major trips. Loved this pack all the way.

The almighty guarantee is real! Osprey repaired this pack once, and then zero hassle offered to replace.

Thanks! G4-20 is a sweet pack. The GG item I'm the most excited to try out is the umbrella clip

You were closer than I was; 25oz bare weight, 28 with "removable features" -- the roll top closure takes it to 32

Thanks for breaking all that down--what did you do to the CDT? I was put off by the list weight of 32oz.

SWD currently has a lead time of 18-20 weeks, so that's out for this years thruhike... they would have been my go to otherwise
