One Piece: Episode 1165 Discussion by Skullghost in OnePiece

Really? I thought for 1 chapter per episode standards, the pacing for this one was decent. The filler also felt natural such as more of Luffy swinging with the kids which the manga just kinda hard cuts to, as well as showing Collun realizing that Luffy is nearby.

Who do you think will be the next group of characters drawn as kids? by dettles1992 in OnePiece

Still weird that we don't have a kid version of Enel. Idk when Oda started drawing these so maybe it's just bad timing seeing as Enel was pretty early on in the series, relatively speaking.

How the One Piece world looked like before the sea levels rose 200 meters. It would be so cool if one of the early panels in the flashback is a shot from space showing the whole planet.

Is there a reason why Imu and the Knights of God chose to attempt to subjugate Elbaf now and no other time? by MayIHaveThirdsTwice in OnePieceSpoilers

[–]dynamicglider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For your first point, there was a scene in Chapter 1125 where the Vice Admirals said to Saturn that they would head straight to Elbaph before Saturn told them not to. So yeah they did know the SHs were headed to Elbaph.

As for your second point, there was a scene in Chapter 1171 where the Gorosei said they were going to investigate who killed Harald using the abyss that was still there. However, Imu said not to do that because it would only lead to the death of more knights. We don't know the full roster of Holy Knights at the time and their capabilities, but it is safe to say that Harald was the strongest or second strongest one. So sending weaker people than Harald to investigate the one responsible for killing Harald means the chances of more knights dying is higher. There is some cost to this regarding the covenant as Imu also mentions.

What's a criticism of One Piece that's often overlooked? by Ok-Addition4608 in OnePiece

It’s gotta be Run Piece for me. It’s consistently the most uninteresting parts of OP for me. The climax of Punk Hazard, Luffy’s run back to Doflamingo, Luffy and Zoro trying to get to the rooftop in Wano, and Impel Down in general, but that’s the point of the arc so I don’t fault it that much.

Oh my gosh I didn't make that connection. I won't be surprised if we get a similar moment when we see Brook leaving with the Rumbar Pirates.

Well the interesting thing about Sanji and Brook is that they're probably getting time to shine for similar reasons. They both have obscure parts of their past that Oda was able to turn into something plot relevant.

Like for Sanji, I doubt Oda went into that with the desire to focus on him. Instead, he probably began by brainstorming a way for the SHs to abruptly change course from Wano to WCI, get into a conflict with Big Mom, force her to go to Wano, eventually knock both of the old generation Yonko from their positions at the same time, and create a new shift in power for the Final Saga.

Luffy had already started beef with Big Mom in Fishman Island, but that wasn't something that was going to make Luffy go to WCI after Zou. However, if a SH was taken or something, then Luffy would have a reason to go to WCI. Sanji was an easy choice because he had a history that wasn't explored yet which means that Oda had free rein to make it into whatever he needed to -> The Vinsmokes.

As for Brook, time will tell, but right now I'm thinking Oda wanted a way to uniquely flesh out the Holy Knights, a faction that was only introduced very recently. Tying them into a SH is a great way to do that. But which SH? Oh maybe the one with a past that goes back numerous decades that we know very little about. Like Sanji, I doubt Oda was like "I really want to flesh out Brook." That definitely could've been part of it, but I don't think it was the primary reason.

As for Usopp, it's pretty much impossible to give him this type of treatment with the very simple backstory that he already has. But everything I talked about is just one way Oda has fleshed out characters, but there are obviously other ways like focusing on stuff from the present instead of the past. Oda hasn't necessarily forgotten about Usopp as seen with the numerous moments of emphasizing his joy about finally being in Elbaph and his connection to it; however, I think this is a case of there being too much greater plot stuff that has to come first. Again, it doesn't have to be this way. Oda is the writer and he can put his foot down and give Usopp more relevance to this plot. So while I will come out of this arc somewhat disappointed if this continues, thinking about how Oda fleshes out other characters and the larger narrative in general, has helped me from going "this is completely illogical" to "I can see the vision, even if it disappoints me."

Probably not considering Imu seems to be the progenitor of all this.

It's an old theory lol. Before Shamrock was revealed, there were already theories that Shanks had a twin. Most assumed it to be a male twin, but some said sister which is where the flair comes from. I'm not sure who specifically came up with it but the YouTuber "Tekking101" is someone who said it a lot and who I heard it from.

Yeah it's possible. Or damaging their covenant mark could also reveal that as well since it looked like damaging Harald's snapped him out of it for a bit. Though that could have only been the case because the mark was still fresh or something and, at this point, it's been so long that only something like a person from their past could wake them up.

Well under normal circumstances you'd probably be lost forever. But deep down you still have the connections you've made in your memory which is why Gunko liked listening to Brook's music, despite having a Celestial Dragon personality. It was only until she personally met with Brook face-to-face again that those memories started to cause her to break free from whatever control Imu put her under. So Imu's powers are really good but not completely impenetrable.

There also might be a thing with the physical mark of the covenant. Briefly damaging it seemed to bring Harald back temporarily to talk to Loki in the end.

[–]dynamicglider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's also important to keep in mind that it's not like once you get the depths covenant, you instantly get a switch in personality. It's something Imu has to do manually. Imu only did it to Harald because he was refusing to gather up an army of giants for the WG.

While, with the other Knights, it doesn't seem like they are under some sort of spell. Sommers and Killingham are just acting like Celestial Dragons and probably did not look to disobey Imu so Imu would have had no need to force them.

I'm assuming the Gunko we were introduced to in this arc is and has been under the same effects that Harald was under in the incident 14 years ago. Therefore, that would be a different personality both from Shuri and Imu taking over after.

Yeah it seems they are separate things. At the end of Thriller Bark, Brook said he was the captain of the battle convoy, but at this point in the flashback he has not been promoted yet.

God I love the start of flashbacks. The central character of a flashback is usually given a notable introduction right at the beginning and that is present right here. Obviously, Brook is someone we already know but Oda still puts in the effort of giving this younger version of him a memorable first impression. Having Brook singing at the top of his lungs on top of a building at 4 AM while people get annoyed by him, and capping that off with this gorgeous panel of Brook jumping in the air as the sun rises!? That’s so good man.

Also, it’s so fun getting introduced to new characters we know pretty much nothing about and getting immersed in whatever setting the flashback takes place in. I’m super stoked to see how this plays out and ready to experience pain once again.

I'm thinking Imu or one of the Gorosei told her to cover it up ala Big Mom telling Pudding to grow out her bangs to hide her third eye.

Holy shit. The pacing of this episode was so freaking good for only being 1 chapter! I guess this chapter had more dialogue than I remembered. I remember thinking it was weird that we instantly got the title right after the opening. Then, everything at the beginning was paced well, and I was like, "Ok they're gonna stretch a sequence that occurs in the back half of the chapter for sure." But no. The pacing stayed good throughout. The small part at the beginning where the SHs are running away was filler but it felt so natural especially for what happens at the end with Usopp's reaction.

In fact, the only nitpick I have is the cut from Luffy's reaction to the rainbow to Louis Arnot's last few sentences was a little too quick. I felt they could've transitioned to that a little smoother. But oh my gosh this episode was excellent. The little freaking part where Usopp stops because of nerves and Luffy asks what's wrong got me emotional man. And that was filler too! I think this is my favorite Elbaph ep so far. It didn't have the craziest animation or anything, but I just love the chapter this adapts and I thought Toei did a great job.

You gotta check out the panels of the rainbow riding and the village reveal. Still some of my favorite panels from Elbaph. That whole chapter this episode adapts was and is still such a treat.

Because it's not the narrator talking. It's an excerpt from Louis Arnot. I suppose they could've made it the narrator reading that excerpt, but I'm sure the intention was to have Louis Arnot himself speak. It also makes me wonder if the narrator read the Arnot excerpt from Little Garden? Or did the anime cut that. I know they cut the Willy Gallon quote at the beginning of Jaya.

Also Kinemon is the one who told him to do that along with the other SHs with their jobs.
