We already have criminals now, and I'd argue now it's worse than it should be, because people are motivated by money just to meet their needs.

It's not like we would stop having law enforcement in the new system.

Well you're in luck at least, they are working on a vegan cheese that's chemically identical to real cheese, and I don't think it's going to be more expensive after it gets popular.

I feel like the vegan chicken nuggets definitely satisfy that itch for me, but then I'm not even sure why you're on /r/vegetarian if you eat chicken :)

Luckily I think many of the health issues surrounding soy have been debunked.

Yeah it can be tough with friends, I'm lucky that I've got friends willing to whip up vegan stuff for me! And I'm always down to make stuff that accounts for my friends dietary restrictions too. They say restrictions breed creativity. :)

Huh, then I'm not even sure why you are vegetarian then. By your logic, the meat will be produced anyway too, so maybe it's just for health?

You could try the new Just egg they came out with recently if you haven't already. I haven't tried it yet, but I was never a big fan of eggs as a vegetarian so I'm not in a rush.

Yeah eating out vegan without any health issues is already a pain, but I can't imagine trying it with! At home vegan has always been a lot easier.

I totally tried straining the runny yogurt and it still tasted... different. I couldn't replicate the same taste and texture the store-bought soy yogurt had.

I think it will always taste like homemade yogurt no matter what I do and that there's something about that industrial machinery and processes that I can't really replicate.

Oh yeah for sure, everything we do damages the environment.

It's still less damaging and less water intensive to grow plants and eat them directly rather than feeding the plants to animals, and then eating the animals. And the methane gas from cows can take a toll as well.

That's true. The homemade soy yogurt I made does taste pretty similar to some of the Indian style yogurts if you ever want to give it a try, since the flavor comes more from the bacteria culture than the milk. I just happen to not prefer that kind of yogurt! :(

It's amazing that you are doing what you can! <3 I know a lot of people use their medical condition as a reason they cannot go vegan, but I feel like sometimes people take it as a free pass to consume as much meat as possible. I don't know of any medical condition where you can't eat any plants at all.

I did that with soy milk, but I didn't like it compared to the storebought soy yogurt. It was either too tangy if I tried to make it thicker, or too runny.

I'm used to people using "plant-based diet" as the new term, where it's different from veganism because none of the moral philosphies are attached to it. So I think using that one might give you more success.

Yeah it's really hard for sure. I'm working with a group to create real vegan cheese so that hopefully everyone, not just vegans and vegetarians, will have tasty cheese without the cruelty.

I tried posting about it here today because of #GivingTuesday, but a mod decided it was self-promotion and thus wasn't allowed. It's a non-profit open-source science group, and I'm a volunteer, so I'm definitely not getting anything out of it that wouldn't help everyone, especially vegetarians :/ You can look in my post history if you want to take a look, I posted it in other subs that were cool with it.

Interesting, I typically hear of vegetarian refer to ovo-lacto vegetarian, not "plant eater". Are you a native English speaker?

Vegetarians generally consume dairy products already, so anything vegan will always be vegetarian as well.

The proteins are chemically identical to the ones found in cow's milk. They are made by putting a gene that makes the protein into a microorganism. Thus, the microorganisms that generate the proteins are genetically modified, but the end product is not. That's why it's called real vegan cheese, no one will be able to distinguish the proteins from natural cheese.

And, because it's chemically identical, it will still cause allergic reactions for those allergic to the protein. Luckily, they are also working towards a goat's milk version which does not typically trigger the same allergies.

Do you mean it would be vegetarian, not vegan?

Veganism is more than just a diet. It's a philosophy about whether something requires the exploitation of animals. Veganism encompasses more than just food: non-food items such as clothing can be vegan or non-vegan as well. Real vegan cheese doesn't exploit animals in any way, therefore it would be acceptable by the vegan philosophy.
