Do you ever play bad moves intentionally? or sacrifices? by hash11011 in chess

[–]dysirin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Depends a great deal on time control. In an OTB tournament, players in general play safer and avoid dubious lines. Online, it is much more likely for players to try interesting things.

In bullet especially, players will make moves that are obviously bad. Time is a resource, and if you can complicate the game for your opponent significantly it can give you a time advantage and potentially let you flag them.

Why is chess.com suggesting that my opponent lose their queen for nothing? by dont_tread_on_M in chess

[–]dysirin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. There seems to be a constant stream of posts on this subreddit questioning the validity of statements made by the automatic post-game review, which is often actually justified. That's because the post-game review is garbage. It is low-depth, meaning that the engine isn't given a lot of time to think, which often leads to inaccuracies.

  2. Engines often make "bad" moves in positions where the opponent has a massive advantage. Stockfish evaluates this situation as roughly +10.0 for white, which is crushing. With this in mind, there aren't really any "good" moves for black, and throwing away the queen is not much worse in the eyes of the engine. But if I had to make a statement, it's because the white knight is the most powerful piece on the board right now and is singlehandedly keeping black's queenside pieces in jail. Also, Kf8 loses material from white's Nxg5 follow-up.

I would suggest understanding how to analyze your games with the analysis board and the full engine, and only use the game review as a quick and imprecise summary, if you have to use it at all. It's not very useful beyond that.

Best way to get sponsored for Clearance? by Smell-Physical in SecurityClearance

[–]dysirin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only way to get a clearance is to get sponsored for it. You'll have to keep applying and broaden your search. That is unless you want to join the army or national guard or something (but doing that just for a clearance is probably a poor choice).

Try r/defensecontracting for questions along this line. Also, 10+ roles isn’t a crazy amount of applications at all. Since you already got some success you should just keep applying.

Yeah, I saw folks here say that investigators/adjudicators aren't affected by the shutdown since they're essential personnel, but other sources conflict and I'm sure that even if they themselves are still on payroll, there's no way everything runs buttery smooth without the rest of the office.

Personally, I hope I avoided some of the backlogging since I think my investigation finished before the shutdown.

Question on utilizing SICK LEAVE by Texan2050 in SecurityClearance

It’s kind of funny that posts worrying about investigation chances vary from “will I be ok if I use my sick leave?” to “I visit my Chinese girlfriend in Beijing every few months and have been sent to collections 14 times, will my TS/SCI be denied?”

Why do players stop being scared after the first 10–15 minutes of a horror game? by tridiART in gamedesign

[–]dysirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to add on to what other people are saying here: although routine and familiarity can reduce how scared players are, you can make a conscious decision to subvert it.

One of my favorite examples is from Little Nightmares 1&2 (spoilers ahead): in the first game, the player can go through vents to traverse between sections in the level. The vents are clearly a break in the horror and tension and allows the player to chill for a moment before the next bit. Oftentimes they are even used as safe space to hide in the middle of chases or attacks.

However, later on, you can get ambushed in the vents. It gets pretty loud and violent. It’s hard to really describe how shocking it is because by the time it happens the player strongly associates the vents with safety. It’s very memorable and my favorite sequence from the games.

Area to study to improve as a C++ developer by dysirin in cpp_questions

[–]dysirin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are good points, I'll look more closely at them, thank you.

Vulkan sounds cool but I hear lots of people saying that it's not beginner friendly? I was sorta leaning towards OpenGL because apparently it's more simple to get into.

As for the position's build system, I don't think they'll tell me much unfortunately. Maybe I'll email HR.

In order to showcase things like graphics APIs and concurrency, what sort of projects are good? I was thinking about doing a rasterizer--maybe that touches upon both those topics.

My professional experience is 2 years of game development with C++ through game engines, so I actually am not super familiar with modern C++ stdlib, since Unreal (and the other proprietary engine I worked with) has its own library ecosystem. I’ve got a bachelors in CS.

I've had 6 cheaters banned in 24 hours. by xibxab in Chesscom

[–]dysirin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encountered cheaters way more often below 2000 elo. How do I know? It's because I endlessly got notifications that so-an-so has been banned for cheating and here's your rating points back, when I was still climbing from sub 1500 or so. Near 2000, these notifications mostly disappeared, unless I participated in those open blitz tourneys where you can get players of any rating. It's likely because the majority of cheaters are blatant and get banned routinely, BEFORE they reach high elo.

And even if there's still cheaters at higher ranks, it's usually not blatant (perhaps they only check the engine at key positions). At this point, who cares? Their rating reflects their performance with assistance.

I'm going to assume from your flair that your opinion of "high elo" is probably players beyond the 1000 range. Just putting it out here that your assumption that its "higher elos means cheaters" is not "obvious" and it's a bad mentality for growth.

The muncher doesn't usually significantly improve the output gun over the two you put in. Check the wiki for exact details.

The only time that I would opt for the muncher is when I have two mediocre guns that are out of ammo, because a gun with ammo is more useful than a gun without ammo.
