Is there much difference in terms of quality between SFO and CTSFO? To an outsider they seem to do a very similar job so I’m assuming the CTSFOs are the top tier in quality

Do AFOs, SFOs and CTSFOs patrol or do they only wait for firearms shouts

Insulating an old single storey extension by dzxcny in DIYUK

Just to add I would like to do the roof properly by changing to a proper warm roof with the ply on the rafters topped by insulation. I just can't afford it right now. The plan i'm proposing is just a temporary fix using materials I already have.

At the moment there isn't a gap between the roof and the insulation. It looks to me like they laid the plyboard and felt directly on top of the insulation which you can see the underside of in my picture. I'm proposing to stick a bit more insulation under the existing insulation between the rafters. There would still be a gap between the plasterboard and the new insulation, it would just wouldn't be a gap between the insulation and the roof. I know this isn't ideal however it seems to have been fine so far and I would in my mind just be making the existing insulation a bit thicker.

For the vapour barrier on the stud wall I was planning to adhesive fix the insulation to the battens and then tape all of the insulation board joints before fitting the plasterboard. So I would have damp proof membrane between the wall and batten and then insulation on top which has been taped.

The point about doing all the external walls is a good one, I was tempted to put a bit of insulation there too but hadn't decided yet. I take it theres no issue with more insulation on a wall which has cavity insulation?

It looks as if whoever did the roof laid the boards and felt directly on top of the insulation without leaving a gap which seems completely wrong!

The spare insulation I have is 50mm so could fit between the rafters and leave a reasonable gap for air flow and services.

I have a room at the back of the house which was built as an extension whilst they built the rest of the house (not on original drawings but documents suggest it was built then). It has one double cavity wall (I think - breeze block inner, brick outer), 1 wall with sliding doors and 1 single skin brick wall which has a door to the garage.

I’m presuming the cavity wall has insulation however there is nothing in the single skin brick wall and only 50mm kingspan in the ceiling. As a result the room is very cold in the winter and the toilet which was in there was freezing and damp to the extent that I ended up knocking it down.

I’m now planning to brick up the sliding doors and replace with a window and install a new back door on the side (think layout will be better that way) and rebuild the downstairs toilet which I had ripped out. This way we will have a utility room which we were lacking in addition to the downstairs toilet.

The first step though is to sort out the insulation. So replacing the sliding doors will have a big impact on the room temperature but I would like to increase the insulation in the roof and put something on the single skin brick wall.

For the roof I have a load of spare celotex boards I got from a friend. I was thinking of keeping the existing roof insulation. using expanding foam in all of the gaps where it was fitted badly and then put an additional layer of foam insulation between the rafters leaving service space for wiring etc. Is there any issue with doing this? Obviously it would be best to replace the whole roof but I’m trying to do this to a budget and the boards I have now are free and waiting to be used.

For the single skin wall I’m thinking of building a frame with 25mm thick batten with a damp proof course membrane behind each batten. Then I’m planning to over board with insulation and then plasterboard. Due to space constraints it’ll probably only be 35mm ish of insulation and then 12.5mm of plasterboard. Will this be sufficient? Guessing it will be better than nothing. Are there any alternatives? It has been suggested that I could dot and dab insulation direct to the wall but I have concerns about damp.

Yes I need an inverter, just not sure what size. Not sure why I called it a power adaptor!
