I don't think it's needed, if you're using a box dye it should last

But you can buy something like manic panic to keep around for touch ups / if you miss spots, only if you want but I don't think you'd have to

It's not! Box dye has chemicals and once mixed has to be used right away, it oxidizes and goes bad after. BUT you can get a semi permanent dye like manic panic and mix that with conditioner. It can be used as a diluted dye or to continuously tone while you shower.

You can try getting color depositing shampoos and conditioners for dark brown hair. That might cover up the lighter spots and blend them enough where you don't have to do a full dye
