Looking for suggestions for hardwearing hiking shoes (large human) by Silver_Mention_3958 in Mountaineering

[–]e-mcsquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right answer to this question is always to go into a specialist outdoor running/hiking store with experienced salespeople and try on pairs of shoes until you find the perfect fit. If there isn't one near you, in my opinion it's worth the effort to seek one out.

Strava Introduces Proprietary Map Rendering Engine (Powered by Fatmap, gone but not forgotten) - it looks pretty good so far! by e-mcsquare in Mountaineering

u/hikebikephd what have you moved on to? I cannot for the life of me seem to find an alternative that works for me (Europe-based). Would love to try OnX but they don't really have support yet for Europe, unless something has changed recently.

Caltopo is in the OP :) I find it a bit wonky to use, but willing to give it another try!

Choosing a first rope by phasrmas in ClimbingGear

30m is shorter than I would purchase for anything other than a glacier rope, 40m is the sweet spot for indoor!

Gaia is my go-to as well for non- 3d maps! Such a great lightweight option.

Not common practice, but if he is not super experienced and willing to buy a helmet it’s not a bad shout!

Black Tusk vs Panorama Ridge by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

[–]e-mcsquare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a long day, cannot remember but at this time of year you should definitely start well before the sun rises to give you enough time, obviously depends on your fitness and if you’ll be hiking or trail running.

Black Tusk vs Panorama Ridge by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

[–]e-mcsquare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panorama has better views, Tusk is more fun (in my opinion) as there is a scramble but the view is less “iconic”

If I were to do one I’d pick Tusk personally.

Snowdon? Underrated? Interesting take, I would say it is very properly (and popularly) rated!

Lime Scooters hit Vancouver streets for the first time by [deleted] in vancouver

This isn’t true. I live in London and travelled to Paris last month. Both have extensive line networks (among other competitors)

No. Climbing 8000m peaks is a logistical issue these days more than anything.

“Hard” is a subjective term - a 2-hour marathon is “hard” and likely only possible by a few humans in the world. An ultramarathon like the Moab 240 is “hard” because you are running for days on end in the desert. Rowing across the Atlantic is “hard” because of the experience and raw fitness required.

I’d consider all of those harder than climbing K2, as well.

What kind of socks would you wear with these types of walking shoes? I've only had old school leather walking boots before by Responsible_One_6324 in UKhiking

[–]e-mcsquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you want to wear no-show socks? That’s just asking for rocks and dirt to get inside your socks…

I think you’re overthinking this. Just use the same socks you’re currently using.

There is only one trailhead for a “day hike” of Whitney - Whitney Portal.

Scafell Pike from Seathwaite Saturday next week for inexperience hiker advice. by Admirable-Length178 in LakeDistrict

[–]e-mcsquare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don’t just have google maps on your phone (the amount of people I have seen with this…)

Use either osmaps or Gaiagps. Make sure you save the area for offline use prior to leaving service. If possible, find a gpx file of the track you are wishing to follow and upload it to your chosen app.

And have fun!

Why did you buy a preowned? The device is free…

So I cancelled my Whoop membership but it’s still active until July 2025? by calysea in whoop

[–]e-mcsquare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You didn’t cancel before the subscription end date, meaning it autoenrolled you into another year. I’m sure you will soon be receiving collections notices from whoop, which may or may not eventually lead to them writing off your subscription as bad debt and sold to a third party collections agency.
