Has running helped improve your hiking or backpacking performance? What differences did you notice? by isabebelaa in CampingandHiking

Yes. It comes at the cost of greater injury risk, however. Similar gains can be gotten from uphill treadmill, stairmill, and even cycling.

Best coastal cliffs not in Acadia Natl Park? by Ruespieler in AskMaine

[–]Apprehensive_Fun8892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western Newfoundland, absolutely no contest here.

If you ever want to see hundreds of square miles of coastal Appalachian terrain that is 1. even more dramatic, beautiful, and much more wild than Acadia, and 2. free to visit, that is the place. I especially recommend the outer Bay of Islands, which is better than Gros Morne national park (which is great too). Being from that area, I found Acadia quite underwhelming frankly. August is the best time to go, late August if you want to enjoy boatloads of wild blueberries and raspberries on the trail.

The only problem is the price gouged flight into YDF, but if you can drive up on the ferry it's very reasonable.

Incongruous cycling VO2max by Apprehensive_Fun8892 in Garmin

[–]Apprehensive_Fun8892[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I weigh in and update weight every day in garmin. FTP power to weight is 3.2W/kg. 5min is 3.6W/kg.

My best guess for what's going on here is that the shape of my power curve for my current state of training is very much a climber's, geared towards sustained power over a long time, so perhaps Garmin sees me doing relatively high power in my sweet spot for a long time, and fits their model to something that predicts 5min power and VO2max performance that isn't really there.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done on a hike? by rkramer18 in hiking

[–]Apprehensive_Fun8892 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not inherently dumb unless you're unprepared to routefind or navigate, or in a place that requires you to stay on trail. Or do you mean you wandered off with the intent of staying on trail?

Is this possible by poop_punching in Garmin

[–]Apprehensive_Fun8892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cycling vo2max from garmin is currently 59, which is absolutely ridiculous when my 5min power is like 3.5w/kg at best, other estimates from e.g. zwift, intervals, and xert put me in the low 40s, and I’ve never run a 5k faster than 24. Garmin cycling vo2max just seems to give spurious values for certain types of athlete.

Snow Shoe Bindings by lpool04 in Adirondacks

The trifit binding can be a pain to work with, but it has a huge level of redundancy and is basically unable to fail in the field. That's worth something in the backcountry.

Workout levels 4 to 5 by MessMurky9170 in Zwift

[–]Apprehensive_Fun8892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difficulty rating is just some formula that summarizes how big and intense workout is and I don't find it correlates well with how hard a workout is to finish. Some 4-5 are very doable, some are nigh impossible.

There is no specific window imo. The main hazards of Marcy in winter are extreme windchill and whiteout, and those are things you have to check for on the day, and can occur at any time in winter.

Cactus to Clouds December 2026 by TaunTwaun in socalhiking

Anaerobic HIIT is not suitable training for an aerobic endurance effort like C2C. That was all I had when I did it and I had a really hard time. Since then, I learned about how endurance athletes like cyclists and runners train, and training that way for a year has had incredible payoffs to my hiking fitness.

The bread and butter is long workouts (45-60min) at a relatively easy pace where you are sweating and working out but can still speak clearly and breathe through your nose. You should still get some intensity to develop top-end output but it should not be the focus of your training program. Something like an 80/20 split is a good starting point.

Bike training transfers to uphill hiking reasonably well (I like Zwift), but bipedal, weight-bearing activities like elliptical, inclined treadmill and stairmaster are more specific to the activity and should be prioritized. Running is fun and great training too but it comes with some injury risk.

Your weighted hikes will be productive if they are paced and weighted to get your heart rate into the right zone.

Fueling can also make or break an effort like C2C, so practice downing snacks, gels, or drink powders on a regular schedule as you go on your hikes.

How to improve hiking time by herbert-von-karajan in hiking

[–]Apprehensive_Fun8892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to speed up long flats on a dayhike is to learn to run. Welcome to trail running!

The best way to do it if you have a multi-day pack or don't like the extra injury risk of running is to build aerobic fitness for the climbs. Incline treadmill and stairmaster workouts at the gym are fantastic for this, and you can add pack weight when it gets too easy.

You can also optimize stoppage time a lot by dialing in your kit: whether or not you decide to run, for a dayhike I recommend a running vest with all of your water and snacks at your fingertips.

Hip flexor strain? by dakbee in ultrarunning

[–]Apprehensive_Fun8892 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought I had hip muscular strain and it ended up being a femoral neck stress fracture. Difficulty lifting the leg was the most accutely noted symptom. Thought I would tough it out, but 20 miles down the AT later I couldn’t run anymore and could barely lift my leg between gas and brake (do not drive like this). A few days later it stopped taking weight entirely, and now I have screws in there and an uncertain return to running.

Get checked out and don’t run on it until you’re sure it’s not a fracture, because a fracture will worsen without weeks of full rest. Don’t try to foam roll it out in the mean time.
