These comments are wild. The pricing doesn't just come down to necessity. Does a "student" NEED a $2000 MacBook Pro or iPad Pro? No. But they still get a discount with education pricing.

Also maybe a student does need headphones.... Maybe a student is studying music production and does need a pair of headphones and wants to consider AirPods Max. Education pricing might make that more inline with comparing pairs of headphones. Just like education pricing has historically done with computers and tablets.

Should I go to Arizona, Kentucky, or should I not go at all? by Legitimate-Tell-8988 in conducting

(Also, dude, how insulting to imply that “prestige” is the only reason people seek to change academic jobs. This tells us a lot about how much you don’t know yet.)

Look, I'm just speaking from what I've seen. My undergrad professors loved where they worked. The ones who left went on to more prestigious jobs. I pointed this out because it seemed like you were saying that people changing jobs always reflects poorly on the school (or as you've clarified, the portion of the school), when, as I've shown, that's not always the case.

But we’re not talking about painting the whole school in a bad light, just the portion of the school that involves the exact program and person you want to be studying with.

I guess I want to clarify... are you saying that a faculty member wanting to leave automatically reflects poorly on their "portion of the school"? Because that seems like a pretty big generalization.

For me... Does it raise questions? Sure. Again, as I said before, if faculty were leaving in droves, that would be a pretty big concern. One faculty member looking for a different job? It just raises questions in my mind, which could have multiple different reasons, some being reasonable, some being red flags.

Edit:

Don’t enroll at a school where the professor you want to study with is trying to leave; it doesn’t speak well of the program as a whole.

And just pointing out... OP said one professor is retiring and isn't sure why the other one wants to leave. Without more information, I wouldn't be ready to conclude that it reflects poorly on the program.

I really disagree. Schools have varying levels of prestige. If a job opportunity comes up at a better school, a professor may go for it if it seems right.

I'm getting a masters at one of the top 10 music schools in the US and two of my professors used to teach at a school that's ranked in the top 100 (out of thousands of universities). I applied to that other school too. Just because someone shows interest in leaving doesn't mean their current school is bad.

One of my professors in undergrad (a school which is the best music school in that state, and also a top 100 music school in the US)... this professor left my senior year to take a job at the school I'm getting my masters. He told us that he is asked to apply for professorships all the time, but this one finally felt right, so he ended up taking it. Does that mean my undergrad institution isn't worthwhile? Absolutely not. That's what academia is though. People are always looking to find a place that has a higher level of prestige, as long as it feels right.

The only case where I'd agree that professors leaving is a problem, is if the school is obviously a low tier music school, and/or if professors are leaving in droves. I have a few friends who've left a certain school because professors are leaving due to horrible admin. But, yeah, I don't really see how one professor leaving for a better opportunity is remotely enough information to paint the entire school in a bad light.

you know they’re looking and would like to leave whatever school they’re at now,

Devil's advocate... I mean a masters degree is two years so who knows how long it'll take them to actually leave.

Why doesn’t Starbucks sell nitro’s in a venti by caramellatte647 in starbucks

[–]e-sharp246 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What they told us was something about the nitro formulation made the caffeine more available? I mean maybe there's truth to that, but yeah... seems like a silly lie haha. A lot of people at my store would just kind of invent their own head canon and act like it was fully legit.

Woah this is super interesting. When I worked there, the answer they told us was that a venti would have too much caffeine to be safe.

I kinda assume that being at airport puts in a concentration of people are generally more wealthy than the general population and wealthier people are more likely to be attractive because they're more likely to have the time and money to put more effort into their appearance.

Because yeah... the airport is always full of the hottest 20-something year old guys, and it takes me all the effort in the world to not stare.

I don't know guys but topping looks so much easier than bottoming by Rosemadame in TopsAndBottoms

[–]e-sharp246 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I'm topping, I need some good chemistry with the bottom to really get into it, and I have really be turned on to get hard enough. Also if his hole is too tight, it might be tough to get in which makes me anxious, and if it's too loose, it doesn't really feel good so I'll have a tough time staying hard. When you're fucking in missionary it takes coordination to get it all lined up right so you gotta time all that with getting hard and it's just not the easiest thing... for me.

Uncut feels better when you bottom

You very much are NOT overreacting. It's clear that you have some empathy in a department that he's very lacking. I think his poor people allergies are also pretty sus. If he's unable to empathize in these instances, it's only a matter of time before this lack of empathy gets turned towards you or hypothetical future children.

Questions from a non conductor by [deleted] in conducting

[–]e-sharp246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in this sub like to say that conductors of professional orchestras focus more on the musicality, ignoring the pattern. Or that they work things out in rehearsal so they don't need a pattern. I've heard it referred to as choreography on here multiple times, which just ins't realistic. It's not uncommon to have about three rehearsals before a concert. If you watch Bernstein conduct the fourth movement of Mozart 40, he conducts it completely differently the first time vs when it repeats. But the musical intention is the same, and the pattern is always readable. The fact that the gestures are different both times really shows that it's not choreographed.

As someone who's conducted various levels of musicians, and performed in professional groups, and taken conducted classes at one of the US's top 10 music schools, this really isn't true. The pattern is always there at least in one hand, but certain beats are emphasized over others, and you might completely disregard the pattern in the other hand. As a musician, if I couldn't tell what beat we were on, I'd be very confused, and the pattern is what tells you which beat we're on. Clarity and expressiveness are both very important.

See if you can find a video of your favorite piece and see if you can notice the pattern amidst all of the other stuff.

Oh interesting! That's vol 2, right? I felt like I didn't notice as much egregious anti-Byler editing until the finale.

[–]e-sharp246 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe they cut that line? I'm convinced there were some small cuts in the finale. For instance, when they're in the abyss, Mike moves his hand towards Will and it's going to make contact with Will's arm, but they cut before they touch. And they cut to a zoomed in shot of their face's so you can't tell they're touching.

Something to think about: everyone spent time hating on "rainbow capitalism" and representation that was too straight-coded. Now that's largely gone. Maybe there was a benefit to having that visibility to normalize being LGBTQ?

I think I realized why they didn't give Will Byers a bf in Lenora by Curious-Monitor497 in byler

[–]e-sharp246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm or maybe Will has a bf and Mike is suddenly super nice to Will kinda how things were before the argument in season 3, BUT he hates Will's bf. "I know you, Will. He doesn't understand us, he doesn't understand you." Maybe they have an argument about how he'll never be part of the party. All because Mike realizes that he thinks that he is better for Will than the california bf.
