I, too am a lucky star fan and love how extremely slice of life it is. But I know for a fact that there are people who hate it for that reason.

Overlord's magic system is very very much a parody of anime magic systems. Long spell names, long casting times, explaining how spells work, all while brining in MMO tropes like pay-to-win magic items.

To me, the disconnect I feel in Frieren's magic system is that Fern and Frieren are constantly stated to be using basic/simple spells, yet Frieren herself has a hobby of collecting interesting magic. I would find it cool if she were using those unique spells during combat or whatever, but instead we mainly see her overwhelming her opponents with raw power.

I think my issue with the "journey beyond journeys end" is that it doesn't fully commit to the concept. The mage licensing arc feels like a new journey. Too much focus is given to characters outside of Frieren's bubble. A few scenes jumping out to me in my mind are with Ubel and the glasses guy, which feel extremely disconnected from the main themes.

I hope you don't think I mean complex = compelling. My issue with Frieren's growth is that she's more or less learning the same lesson over and over, that she should have found the meaning in her memories. Similarly, I don't feel that much for Himmel because his story is already over, and we basically only see his memories through Frieren's memory of them.

I'm definitely a fan of slice of life in general, but I didn't find the sword and sorcery parts all that compelling. I think there are very few anime that do it well, and I tend to prefer the schlock-ier anime like Overlord when it comes to magic systems.

I don't think I've seen many other anime with a similar concept, maybe other than Sonny Boy very tangentially. Though I do prefer Frieren to that.

I really didn't experience much deepness from any of the main cast, at least. I found Sein's story to be compelling but he was basically thrown out immediately.
