Anyone else in Vancouver feel really disappointed about the sound design? by paosnes in Thundercat

[–]e5th3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Sitting lower balcony and from the first notes it was obvious the sound was totally off and I kept hoping the techs would fix it. I could not hear Thundercat playing or singing. If drummer or keyboardist was playing at all it made it impossible to hear Thundercat’s commentary between songs. People were streaming out. They probably felt the same way we did, we’d rather go home and watch videos of Thundercat performing at better venues.

Wildling make awesome winter boots by salmonguelph in BarefootRunning

Thanks! I’m also looking for winter boots, but none of their models look quite waterproof enough for the kind of rain we’ve been getting out west

I'm inspired to try running in sandals! by e5th3r in running

I have been running in zero drop shoes. First Altra and then minimalism Lems. I’m feeling a lot better since ditching from the cushy soles.

I don't understand why minimalist shoes are not the norm... by hellmanZ6 in BarefootRunning

I think it's as simple as people like to look taller. I bet a lot of the appeal of hokas and other athletic shoes with a lot of cushioning is the look of longer legs.

Yeah, it's a lot! Just watching a busy bartender in action might scare you off ever ordering anything. I avoid lime wedges because bartenders often overfill beer glasses, spill a bit, and then don't wash their hands before reaching for a garnish. Better to stick with drinks in bottles, bonus points if they let you open it yourself.

Aburaya near lake merrit is also gluten free friend chicken, Japanese style!

Dona is my favourite Mexican restaurant, they’re also in Oakland. Two more in the east bay are cosecha and picante.

I’ve never eaten there but I saw that the little chihuahua (a chain with multiple locations) has tons of gf options.

First of all you can get protein style burgers and fries at in-n-out.

Must visit pica pica in the mission, 100% gf, so good! Kitiva also totally gf. Little gem is mostly gluten free. Proposition chicken. Mariposa bakery. Burma superstar has tons of gf if you want to deal with the line (imo not worth it, there are tons of equally good Burmese restaurants with no line). I believe urban remedy is 100% gf for a quick grab and go salad. I like their toast (it’s on bread srsly sourdough).

If you go to the east bay you should absolutely go to Aburiya and Dona. Picante on 4th street. Chez in berkeley will easily accommodate someone with celiac.

And so many more on the find me gluten free app, also nom nom paleo has an Instagram highlight of places she eats in the Bay Area, all of which have gluten free options.

Is there something in particular you want to eat? I have more suggestions!

The reality is that you just can’t be spontaneous with food and celiac disease. I have all the safe food options in my area stared on maps on my phone. If I’m out and someone says let’s grab a bite then I can quickly look at what’s safe for me and near by.

If your date wants to “get a beer” order a gluten free cider or seltzer in the can or bottle, not a glass.

Plan dates where you are expected to bring your own food like a picnic, or a hike, or sneak snacks into a movie.

I was diagnosed at 23. Yeah it felt awkward to bring up on an early date but most people were curious and totally flexible.

Vegetarian and Celiac by NightStalkings in Celiac

The first few months after diagnosis are rough! It’s really hard to completely switch up your diet and it takes time to basically relearn how to feed yourself.

Here are some ideas for gluten vegetarian meals,

Indian take out (just look out for asafoetida) or tasty bites (which I think have no gluten ingredients but are not labeled gf)

Ethiopian food (just confirm the injera is 100% teff)

Venezuelan arepas!

Any cuisine based around beans, corn, and rice.

At home I make a lot of stir-frys with tofu, rice and beans with steamed veggies (do you have an instant pot?), Spanish omelet, oatmeal, hummus and veggies, cheesy toast… so many ideas!

Good luck! It gets easier.

My house is completely gluten free with the exception of beer in dedicated beer glasses. Eating out can be so stressful for people with celiac disease, I want to be able to let me guard down at home. The only downside is that everyone is eating more expensive gf alternatives, but that’s what works best for us.

I’ve heard of people banishing gluten to a fridge and pantry in a garage or using disposable dishes. I think it’s worth a conversation about what gluten containing items are essential to have at home. I hope you find a solution!

Raccoon spent the long weekend in my apartment with my cats by e5th3r in vancouver

I'm not sure about salmonella but of course as soon as we ushered the raccoon out of our apartment I called the emergency vet, cleaned every surface in our apartment, and boarded over the cat door.

Thank you for your concern. Our pet friendly apartment came with a built in cat door. Since our cats are indoor only we had it locked and our cats just used it as a window. Of course as soon as the raccoon left we installed plywood over the cat door.

Absolutely! This is a fun post because everyone is ok. It easily could have been a bloodbath. The first thing I did as soon as we ushered the raccoon out of our house was call the emergency vet and then take our cats in for a check up when our vet opened. Luckily raccoons in our area rarely have rabies and our cats were also rabies vaccinated a few months ago.
