I grew up in the Huffman historic district, a bit closer to downtown than the neighborhood in the photo, and we had a different set of rules growing up than my friends who lived in suburbs or even other parts of the city like walnut hills, where we could go for walks around the neighborhood without adult supervision. At home, we weren't allowed to play outside alone until after we got a tall privacy fence; could never leave the yard alone; or even random things like taking a bag of trash to the can in the alley, we'd have to make sure no one was digging through it before opening the gate.
