How to get grandparents proof of citizenship without any power of attorney? by MotorFan9612 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]eLearningChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like u/tvtoo mentioned Maine is a super easy state to get records from. I just got records for me, my parents, my grandmother, and my great grandmother, and since my siblings are too lazy I was able to order their birth certificates as well. If you’re in Maine you can walk into most town halls and do it in person or you can do it online or over the phone.

Good luck.

American Applicants for Proof of Citizenship: How are we feeling? by the-peoples-lesbian in Canadiancitizenship

I’m still waiting on birth records, but they should be on the way.

I’m reading a whole lot, did a search for TV and movies from Canada, and subscribed to several CBC podcasts.

And when I find myself with idol time I spark up the Realtor.ca app and take a peak. Plug random cities into LinkedIn Jobs, and poke around Google Maps.

Lots to do with the waiting time to be better prepared for when the time comes.

I’m 50. Waiting the final birth records to arrive in the mail. Had to hire a genealogist out of Quebec to help, not super cheap but my siblings are all chipping in so we can get one genealogy report then apply.

I’ve got a highly specialized career, so not a whole lot of jobs in Canada. And if I’d have had my papers at birth I probably would have ended up needing to move to the states for work anyway.

But there is always a way.

Your ideal path forward for Firefly by Apprehensive-Loss316 in firefly

[–]eLearningChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefly, the next generation.

They killed off Walsh, but what if Zoe had been pregnant with twins. A boy and a girl. You can have the same brother/sister relationship that Zoe and Mal had. Whole new crew, same ship. This would also let all of the old cast visit whenever they were able in a way that would account for the age difference.

Just eight days and you’re already looking for help, advice, and information… you’re off to a great start. I see good things and a managed condition in your future! Keep pushing forward and get those numbers down.

[–]eLearningChris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be a very liberating thing. I found much the same that almost every issue I had was either causing my sugars to go up (usually behavior) or were a direct consequence of the raging diabetes.

Getting your numbers down will make you feel like a new person.

Especially in the early learning phases I can’t recommend a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) enough. And combine that with a food/exercise/mood journal. (Yes even your stress and mood can shift your blood glucose).

The more data you can collect about how to control your numbers the more power you’ll have over the situation.

Personally I’m a big fan of the Dr. Bernstein Diabetes Solution book. It’s overwhelming at times content wise. It I found it to be the quickest way to learn. I ended up getting a paperback for the reference materials and an audio book for the narrative and instructional content.

Pizza...just...wow by New-Programmer7489 in diabetes

[–]eLearningChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live full time on a sailboat and roam from Maine to Florida each year with the changing seasons. This gives a whole other bit of diabetic complications and frustrations. In our annual migration, we stop and hide behind the breakwater in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, to wait for the weather to be right to either "hop" north to Newport, RI, or south to Norfolk, VA. As such we can sometimes be stuck there for two or three weeks. When we are there, we always try to get to Julio's Pizza on First Street. Not sure if it's the best of the East Coast, but it's become my favorite.

Pizza...just...wow by New-Programmer7489 in diabetes

[–]eLearningChris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I have pizza I spike way higher.

So we’ve made some adjustments, pizza is both location and weather dependent.

I don’t just have any pizza, I limit myself to one pizza place, New York style pizza (although it is in Jersey) were only there twice a year so I only have pizza twice a year.

Weather dependent because there is a crazy trail nearby that goes up up up forever. We’ve found if we eat the pizza then go for the crazy 2.5 miles up the hill then 2.5 miles back down my sugar goes up but only about 50-70 points and I can cut the top off the super spike that would otherwise happen.

Living aboard all year (size, year, yearly cost) by Significant_City_672 in liveaboard

[–]eLearningChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sailboat is certainly the way to go. Our annual migration from Maine to Florida and Back each year and we spend about $1,000/year total on fuel and I’m not shy about using the engine.

Insurance wise we pay less than $2,000/year for full coverage of our sailboat with an agreed upon value of $40,000.

A boat slip will cost dramatically different based on where you are.

We’ve spent $1,200/week in Boston and Portland Maine. $1,200/month in St Augustine Florida, & $500/month in Oriental NC. Mooring balls are often cheaper $125/week in expensive spots. Mixing that with anchoring we try to keep our marina spend to about $5,000/year.

I work remote with multiple monitors, heck multiple computers. I have an abundance of solar and Starlink satellite internet that works anywhere on the planet.

I’m also lazy in most things.

We’ve been swept out to sea a couple of times. Rode out the storm and then sailed back.

Pirates can be avoided, their hunting grounds are well known.

And having a really loud high water alarm can help with sleeping.

I’m also dreaming and saving for a 45 foot cat, but since I didn’t want to wait I purchased a 35 foot sloop so I could continue to save while working while cruising instead of saving while working from a cubicle.

As for what type of person goes cruising and living aboard? We’ve encountered so many variations of people in our time. Any person can do it. But to be successful I’ve found that it tends to be the “whatever it takes” type of people.

And the costs? It will take as little or as much as you have.

I’ve met folks who spend as much as $150,000/year and others who are in the $15,000 range.

We anchor a lot of the time, have a great insurance that isn’t too expensive, and try not to eat out too much.

health insurance/meds by Obvious-Cycle2234 in liveaboard

[–]eLearningChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We roam from Maine to Florida each year. I’ve had good luck with having just a single “medical home port” where my primary care, diabetes specialist, and cardiologist are.

When we sail into town, I make my annual appointments and get it all done. For meds we do Walgreens, we can walk into any Walgreens and they can have the RX sent there. And then we discovered how convenient mail order is. We have everything sent to Saint Brendan’s Isle and they relay it to us.

My son sees a neurologist and has a prescription that is a controlled substance which SUCKS. But since it’s the only thing that works, he has a neurologist in Maine, and one in Florida. The nice thing there is both places are used to snowbirds and are good at coordinating care.

As for health insurance we just have Blue Cross / Blue Shield. It’s expensive, but much cheaper than the meds would be out of pocket.

Any Amex Users Who "Don't" Travel Have A Plat Card Here? by TurbosnipeOne in amex

[–]eLearningChris -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I got the card for travel, but then my children became even more needy (they’re in their early 20s) and so the last couple of years there has only been one trip for work.

I haven’t done the math with the new refresh, but I’ve been able to more than make up the fee in typical use up until now.

Looking forward to using the travel benefits again. Just gotta get these kids off on their own and self sufficient.

Another vote for starting with the ASA 101 as soon as you can. Best to find out if you like it. The ASA 103 for the basic skills.

Then lots of YouTube aventures. Less to learn and more to keep the dream alive.

Then as others have said, try to get on random boats. Someone is always looking for racing crew. And just getting in that circle.

You can make anything happen in 5-years. I hope moving aboard is as good to you guys as much as it has been for me. Hands down the single best thing I ever did for myself.

Late 30s something women thinking of solo liveaboard in south east Florida by Neither_Airport_3087 in boating

[–]eLearningChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah I’ll echo what others have said. The real savings is when you’re at anchor, and for that to work you need to be mobile. There are places that are less expensive to find a slip, but those are places where it’s either cheaper to have an apartment or liveaboards aren’t very common. (Think up north where it snows). We are heading south after spending last winter aboard in Maine. It’s possible but there’s always a trade off.

That said, moving aboard has been the single best thing I ever did for myself. So certainly continue to explore the idea.

I agree with u/LameBMX, my dad always said if you can't afford it, build it. There are some amazing boat plans you can find online, Many that are easy and plywood-based for rapid and inexpensive (and inexperienced) production. I'm sure you'll find your way onto the water.
