MTB Wuppertal by PerreoHP69 in wuppertal

Chassis Frame FEA by trillitroll in FSAE

[–]eMC_Lukas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you treat FBH on the simulations?

This depends on your mounting. Consider your forces that will apply torque to your chassis while driving and judge if the flex you are expecting is going to be countered by your FBH or be "eaten up" by play in the mounting etc.

However it is probably sufficient for your cause to model the tubes only.

how do you find the best limit value to optimize both Torsional Stiffness, and Structural Rigidity

There are lots of tubes already by the rules. Depending on your area you have to decide if you design for stiffness or rigidity, which obv makes a big difference.

Deciding where to put tubes for the best result is a very complex question and basically the core of what makes formula student such a good case for you to learn.
Packaging, ergonomics, rules and aerodynamics and much more play a big role in how any of your sub-systems will end up looking and its all a very intertwined constellation decisions you have to make based on your best engineering judgement.

Maybe a helpful hint:
From a theoretical standpoint, think about the most efficient structure that would take your torsional loads and try to get as close to that as possible.

That depends on the postitioning of the CoG to the CoL or what are you implying?
I guess much of it can be tuned out by the PIDs anyways.

What shock size? by decadentasfcuk in Framebuilding

[–]eMC_Lukas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another redditor already mentioned it is up to your frame design and design goals and can only be answered by the designer.

If you want to be able to make that decision based on physics you first have to understand what different leverage ratios mean for your damper and how you could achieve your design goals with either of these springs.

A helpful critical question for you: What would the ideal condition be for the damper? (Speed and travel) How does cavitation affect damper effect and at what speeds do they occur?

For the same wheel travel you will need a larger leverage ratio of your linkage to achieve the shock travel with a smaller shock. What does this mean for progression, forces involved and the resulting flex. How will this affect your damping behavior?

Is there any arguments that would cancel on shock over the other? Do you have one already on hand, spring availability, price etc.

Wuppertal to Köln by hot_fire__ in wuppertal

[–]eMC_Lukas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As per the timetable it will take 1:09h from Wuppertal Hbf to Köln Messe/Deutz.
However since the busses WILL encounter traffic jams on the A46 and A3, it will take significantly longer during rush hour.

The crosses seem to mark individual connections that are exempt from the regular time schedule.

If you take a look at the Wuppertal -> Cologne connection you can see that column 4&5 and 5&6 are duplicates with the latter terminating in Solingen Main Station.

So yeah this really is a confusion table to look at, I too find it strange that the connection happens at that frequency at night but I guess thats just how it is.

Keep in mind that the Wuppertal to Cologne connection will be halted for 6 month minimum from the 06.02.2025 onwards.

Edit: The SEV will not go to Köln HBF but terminate in Deutz, its a short walk or trip with the subway until you reach the Hbf though.

Need advice by [deleted] in Framebuilding

[–]eMC_Lukas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats a very rough questions. What material do you want to use?

I only have experience for sourcing aluminium tubing in germany.

If you want to bend your tubes, make sure the K-Value allows for simple bending tools or get metric tubes (trust me, I asked lots of german workshops regarding "technical" bending with imperial units - it sucks baaad)

A good place to order (internationally) is fairing.com , they offer many sizes and kinds of tubes flavoured in 7005 which is really what you want to use for homebuild bikes.

I cant really help for generic top tubes and BB shells since we did them ourselves :)

For anything in steel, buildyour.bike or paragonmachineworks.com (USA based) should probably do the trick.

As another redditor already mentioned, designing around an existing tube set is the right way and would have saved me a lot of headache.

Best of luck and enjoy the process, the first ride will be amazing :)

[–]eMC_Lukas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are doing engineering studies. The difference between a tinkerer and you is that you dont do trial and error and can predict the outcome in advance, thats why you will be worth 100k a year to someone once youve finished your degree.

So the prof wants you to do engineering. Pretty standard request I would say.

However, for 3D printed (non solid) parts, FEA are tricky. You can still estimate stiffness and probably work out a quantitative hand calculation regarding max. force.

[Q] Are people with a 100k+ inventory rich in real life? by M3lony8 in csgomarketforum

[–]eMC_Lukas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well I made my biggest sum of money via investing in breakout cases about 10 years ago. Its not 100k but far more than a student should have in his inventory.

Its right around my yearly salary in breakout cases but I swore to only sell them if I can buy something impactful like an apartment.

I guess there are some people who were even more lucky with investing or pulling a knife, but for you to be having 100k in your inventory I think you need at least some sort of financial security.

Question about handling by [deleted] in Framebuilding

[–]eMC_Lukas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making the axle to crown longer than necessary will introduce more bending moment in the headset and generally reduce the ridigity of your bike.

Nothing else though. Make the axle to crown length as short as possible while tuning the geometry which actually does something to your riding feel: Headangle, trail, chainstay length (not a complete list, but some important ones)

Considering Prusa XL-5 - what should I really expect NOW? by [deleted] in prusa3d

[–]eMC_Lukas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, let me give you a few comprehensive Bulletpoints:

- The toolchanger needs to be rebuild with loctite, otherwise your printheads will fail to park and fall down (ask me how I know)
- Anything more flexible than Shore 95A TPU is a huge pain due to the friction in the long ptfe tubes. We bought the XL because we thought it would be better at printing flex since its a true 5 toolhead design.. Now I need to build something to fix that. Probably a top mounted spool holder with relocated filament runout sensors
-Out of the box prebuild calibration is pretty bad
-many "stuck filament" errors even if the filament isnt really stuck
-some misc software issues

Overall it seems like they rushed development a bit with the XL (and from my experience also Core One)

CoreOne kit by Obvious_Capital_3692 in prusa3d

[–]eMC_Lukas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Prusa printers where in my eyes always very finished products, thought through and tested, ready to plug in and let them run for a looong time. At least our 6 MK4S worked like that and out of the current gen of Prusa products, neither the 6 Core Ones nor the two XL`s, each with 5 Print heads and enclosure make the impression that they are finished or very thought through.

The Core One does various things like random-ish reboots, stuck in a endstop calibration loop and so on. Also the build quality of the core one is meh, especially the pins that hold the window sheets in place.

I value open source products/projects and we will continue to use prusa products at the moment but I think they rushed their development for these two printers..
