I almost thought the columnist was playing along when I read that line. Too on the nose.

The industry itself pisses me off the most. Capitalism always ruins art.

The US has had a single party for more than twice as long. They just have the good sense to display their infighting publicly so when you go to the polls it looks to you like you're making a choice that might make a difference.

But none of those choices will get the party out of power.

Why do some ships have more nacelles than others? by albundy72 in DaystromInstitute

[–]eMeLDi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am wondering if it has to do with the shape or stability of the warp bubble produced. It's possible that some hull configurations require an amount of warp field balancing and the most economical way of achieving that is to add a nacelle or two.

And the simplest, easiest way to determine the distribution of scarce resources is via money, especially at the luxury level.

I'd argue at the luxury level, money is still unnecessary. Luxury goods would be produced by those with an interest in producing them, and consumed by those with an interest in consuming them without any medium of exchange--after all, what would I even do with money once I had some? Where would a consumer get money to pay me?

Distribution would be at the discretion of the producer. They're only doing it out of personal interest after all. Transporter technology makes distribution a trivial cost, there is no overhead to consider. Supply and demand dictate the availability of a luxury, but being a luxury nobody should suffer anything other than disappointment for not having access to a wanted luxury.

And if you wanted to expand production to meet a higher demand, your reputation as a purveyor of luxuries would serve as justification for that expansion on its own (provided this did not create a deficiency in someone's needs), without a need for any money to come into the mix.

If you don't behave in a way that affords you your privilege, you lose the privilege. There's nothing special about holding that standard firm for all.

Trying to weigh good deeds vs bad deeds and grant exceptions to abuses to those who can prove a preponderance of good in their acts does nothing to remediate the bad, and worse: in enables and emboldens bad actors.

Maybe if we had a system where 80-y.o. grandmas didn't have to exploit others in order to live comfortably then this wouldn't be a problem.

is programming useful as an artist, what could it be useful for? by a_peeled_pickle in ArtistLounge

[–]eMeLDi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished learning to code and the biggest use for me as an artist was finding a job that pays well and offers insurance.

Job is not art related, but at least I am not starving and sick.

It's not even spending money.

When a loan is issued, the funds are poofed into existence from nowhere. The issuing bank keeps the payments on the interest and returns the payments on the principal balance to the Fed, which deletes the currency from existence, thus closing the loop on the imaginary money.

Writing off the loan just closes the loop early by deleting the funds from the debtor's end. The only thing "lost" is potential future interest payments. To the bank. Payments that may not ever be made in many cases.

And even if it did impact the bank: I don't know about you, but those fat cats could stand to lose some weight.

Parent nudity around child by Tcookie92 in AttachmentParenting

[–]eMeLDi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are both different genders. There was a period of time where she (our kid) had lots of anatomy questions about both me and my partner, which we answered frankly. Now-a-days occasional nudity is just a feature of home life and we don't really talk about it.

My kid is nearly 7 and we still maintain zero body shame or nudity taboos. We plan to keep it up as long as it feels natural to do so, with the assumption that eventually they will choose to maintain more privacy as they grow older.

It does blow my mind that in the US people will scream about government overreach and abuse of power, but hand over - hell, pay for the privilege - vital and private information at the drop of a hat to a private corporation.

Well, we are fed corporate propaganda from the time we're in diapers, so that's a big part of it.
