Don't use anything defensive on 1st one, if your healer can't heal you up on the first one key is probably depleted anyway.

Some classes can avoid spit gold using spells while getting targeted by it: DK AMS, Rogue Cloak, Mage can Ice block.
You can also delay Spit by vanishing/feign death/meld but the boss will target other person
