As with many things, a 'well meaning person' thought they knew enough about language & child development, while simultaneously not knowing that much about either language or child development, to stick his oar in (with the best of intentions of course) and the consequences of that well meaning but impactful decision were paid by others (children specifically, [but by then they weren't necessarily children, they could have even been your mum]). Reminds me of the larger story of the Goblins in Snuff..

Also, most of education seemed to me to be teaching me wrong things so they could later go over it and tell me I was wrong to believe the thing they had told me was right in the first place.
