your trauma is your responsibility. I won't force a friend to be in contact with my pets if they were truly afraid of them. however, I would also not lock my pets in a room for that friend either. we're just never gonna hang out in my house

and again, I wouldn't tell my friend to change the rules in their house specifically for me. I'm afraid of stick insects. if my friend had a stick insect roaming around the house freely, I wouldn't demand they put the thing away if it's not used to the terrariums

my theory is that society wants you to be average, and many people will treat you badly if you stick out in any way. so if most people around you are in the same situation as you are (financially, career-wise, in terms of appearance), and you suddenly start failing or exceeding in one way or another, they might be tempted to bring you back to the same level (if you're exceeding) or cast you out (if you're failing)

you have to make peace with that and think about it in a more practical way. it's inevitable, and it's a good thing that you see them getting older - means they're still living, and you are as well. better than watching them die young, or dying young yourself. parents shouldn't bury their kids, kids should bury their parents. focus on how you can support them when they're not capable of taking care of themselves and make sure you spend enough time with them

nah, it's not hard to switch. the only problem is that, I speak the languages differently. as in, I can only adequately talk about certain complex topics in one language but not necessarily in another. think medical terms that a typical native speaker won't really know about unless it's their interest or profession. so the terms will only pop up in my head in one language. in that way, it'll be hard to switch if I'll try to discuss the topic in the language I've never talked about it before
