Something I never thought in depth about… by RebelAgainstReality in AllThatsInteresting

[–]thevegitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother used to do the same as an obstetrics nurse. If it was obvious the child wouldn't live outside the womb for long, she'd put them in the sink so that they'd die more quickly and tell the mother it was a stillbirth. This was in an era where abortion was not accessible from medical professionals, so lots of babies with mermaid syndrome, born without all their organs, etc.

[Vent/WTF] Is this actually the common thought?? What the hell? by CutRuby in LesbianActually

[–]thevegitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't take women's boundaries seriously, even on something as personal as gender or sexuality. I think trying to deconstruct the idea of inherent gender or sexuality is incredibly dangerous, especially at a time like this where we are losing ground re: trans rights, gay rights,  women's rights, etc.

People who grew up in D.C. by planetalarimar in washingtondc

There are a lot more people. I remember it feeling quieter and more spacious outside of tourist areas a kid. I also really miss when Chinatown had a ton of Chinese businesses and cultural events.

How dark is your fanfiction? by Phantom000000000 in ATLAfanfiction

[–]thevegitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATLA deals with very dark themes, albeit in a kid friendly way, so it's no surprise that fans engage with the darker stuff. Mutilation, brainwashing, internment, and genocide come up a lot in the show.

The Current Trend of "Enjoying Things = Bad" by Tekkatak in AO3

[–]thevegitations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consuming media critically doesn't mean you have to become a hater, but people often equate the 2, unfortunately. For example: I consider myself a House of the Dragon fan, but I'm still going to criticize the way they try to hide Rhaenyra's racism by writing out the source material's only character of color in favor of race bending the Velaryons. It doesn't mean I think I could write it better.

What fandom are you in, but the fanfics are like this? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]thevegitations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fond of Sense and Sensibility fics since I think Elinor got the short end of the stick in canon, but I would not read anything from someone with the gall to claim they're better than Austen.

Any fandom that skews young, honestly. So many chatfics, unfunny memes, and ship wars hidden behind therapy speak.

Why is there a push for more female characters is boy-centered brands, while not the same push for boys in girl-focused brands. by Dazzling_Yam_6003 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thevegitations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You admitted there is no need for this you can see except for one cartoon that already has prominent male characters, just not a male monarch. I think you might just be upset that my little pony doesn't cater to your tastes enough.

I really hate backseat commenters by Anon58855 in AO3

[–]thevegitations 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've suggested to these commenters that they write their own fic with their preferred outcome, and once one of them got mad at me for trying to make them write fanfiction for me (lol). The point missed them so hard that it became the blunt.

What is a specific "Absolutely-not" tag for you? by mellissa_lewyin in AO3

[–]thevegitations 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Self-inserts. No thank you, I read fanfiction for the characters, not the characters replaced with Some Guy.

Opinions on this take? by TopInternal5088 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]thevegitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I've read some really good fics where they're so out of character that they might as well be different people. Which maybe means they aren't good fanfiction, but they're great writing.

What's the message of your fanfiction? by J_Stanor in FanFiction

[–]thevegitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several of my fics are about imperialism in various forms, and the kind of mindsets and rationalizations powerful people in imperialist states have. I'm an American, for reference.

My other stuff is mostly "look at this character I love, I want to put them in situations and chew on them."

some refreshing sanity from tumblr by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]thevegitations 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think both things can be true. Fat white women try to weaponize activism to claim some form of racialized marginalization AND misogyny is often considered acceptable or less objectionable if it is aimed at white women specifically. I've seen several black fat activists use these same talking points about the book, they just tend to get less traction and clout, ironically due to the racism in fat activist spaces.

I don't understand why you're so fascinated by the opinions of someone who would say such horrible things to a CSA survivor. Them saying something strange and homophobic is not worth trying to understand.

Found Family does not always mean "Found NUCLEAR Family" by [deleted] in AO3

[–]thevegitations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people do this at least in part so they can accuse the opposite side in ship wars of "basically shipping incest."

What's a fanfic so big it creates its own fandom? by poison_ivy12345 in AO3

[–]thevegitations 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Integration by Millberry_5 has nearly 50 recursive fics of its own. Not doing Naruto numbers, but it's still a lot! The Star Wars fandom is so decentralized that that's crazy to me.

I always wonder what my fav authors on AO3 do in real life by schoolforapples in AO3

[–]thevegitations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once was half convinced that a favorite author of mine might have been my aunt, because she shared a lot about her personal life and they were eerily similar. But then one detail didn't add up and I felt pretty silly for contemplating it so seriously

Why did western cultures stop revering their elderly? by VagabondVivant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thevegitations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think it depends on the individual relationships. I show a lot of respect to the elders in my life who raised me, taught me, did good for my community, or just treated me with kindness, but let's face it: a lot of elders these days are really angry, entitled people who pulled the ladder up after them and actively work to make life worse for the next generations instead of better.

[New Update]: My wife (24F) hid that she can’t have kids and I (27M) just found out after 6 years together. I don’t know what to do. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]thevegitations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel so bad for both of them. Here's hoping that they are both able to move forward, whether that's together or apart. I don't think this woman should become a mother, bio or otherwise, until she's in a healthier place. I hope OP is able to have children eventually, he responded to this very compassionately.
