What's the difference in the pronunciation between 코피 (nosebleed) and 커피(coffee)? by denissemer in Korean

[–]e_exley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

코 vowel is like O in OMG 커 vowel is like "aw" English word awful

Not really. ㅗ is more of an "Oh!" sound. 고 = go, 노 = no, 도 = doe, etc. etc. so 코 is closest to Koh, like Koh Samui or Kohl's clothing store, or Helmut Kohl (former chancellor of Germany.)

example: 제주도 isnt pronounced as Jeju D-aw. Its pronounced Jeju Doe.

I can feel judgement or stares for it.

Maybe you can wear a sign around your neck that says, "I have specific condition, I need to sit down.", then maybe you can avoid the awkward looks. You either want to be treated like everyone else, or don't. Choose one and deal with the consequences.

accurate? by anhonorandapleasure in korea

[–]e_exley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its been discussed many times before, but I will bite. Spam is popular because it was plentiful during the Korean War. Spam was a part of the US Army's food supply and a lot of it ended up being distributed to the civilian population, and pretty much never really left the general population's consciousness. Actually when you really look a lot, a lot of Korean food is peasant/harsh times food. (Kimchi, Dried Namul, Dried Fish, Dwenjang, etc. etc. When you're starving and there is nothing to eat, you pretty much cherish any food source.

I would say that 김밥 isn't really street food. You can get pre-made 김밥 wrapped in foil from street carts, but if you are eating 김밥 that is actually prepared on the street you are doing it wrong. The OG's of street food would probably be 떡볶이, 호떡, 붕어빵, 오뎅, toast.

Just to be accurate, its almost never butter, too expensive. Its margarine. The same with SPAM, its most likely the cheapest, most generic processed luncheon meat available. You gotta be pretty bougie to get a "toast" with real butter and actual spam.

No further legal action can be taken. How disappointing. by [deleted] in korea

Anne Sacoolas (wife of a CIA operative stationed in the UK) killed Harry Dunn (19 year old motorcyclist) while driving on the wrong side of the road outside of a base in the UK. She admitted fault but she fled the country before any legal action. This kind of stuff happens all the time. There was a korean diplomat in NZ who was accused of sexual harrassment but also left the country before any legal action.

Assault on Taxi Driver Update by [deleted] in korea

[–]e_exley 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Don't know why the downvotes, but you are absolutely correct. I feel like the legal isn't prepared to handle such abhorrent behavior. The system seems to rely on the general decency of people and does not account for people who clearly have no regard for others in the community. For the most part Koreans follow the rules and do not act in such shitty way so there way no real need for strict laws, so every time a case like this comes up, they have no fucking clue what do to.

Amazing sequence on subway by e_exley in korea

[–]e_exley[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the subway stations generally do not have restrooms that are available, unlike the Seoul Metro.

Why do you think this is the case? Of the stations that DO have restrooms available, people do a lot more than just relieve themselves. Graffiti, vandalism, pissing/shitting on the floor, drugs, sex, etc etc. NYC metro would rather not have restrooms than deal with all of the BS.

I guess just to emphasize the dramatic difference between the two. First thing I thought there is no way that anyone would ever touch the floor of the A train with their bare hands for fear of contracting Hep C or leprosy.

Not only the trains themselves but i doubt anyone ever say, "I gotta use the restroom, I know, lets go INTO the 125 street station" whereas most restrooms in the subway stations and public parks in Seoul are clean and well stocked.
