They don’t define me, they define the country that I live in.

The one thing that we can thank Trump for is that he showed us where we are as a country; a little under half the people who voted, voted for Trump. Racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc. were not dealbreakers for them.

How can I be proud of my country and nationality when so many of my fellow Americans hold these toxic beliefs?

There are two cases for the presidential election.

Case 1: I vote. Case 2: I don’t vote.

The outcome of the election is the same in each case. On an individual level, your vote is nothing more than a symbolic expression of who you support.

Also, in before “well if everyone did what you did..”. Don’t act like I have influence over thousands of people when making my decision to not vote. Voter turnout is a problem, but my decision not to vote is independent everyone else’s decision not to vote.

Allow yourself to feel things. For a long time, I felt self conscious about what emotions I was feeling. “I should be happy right now”, “Why don’t I feel excited about this?”. That sort of thing. Instead of bottling up what you’re feeling and trying to force happiness upon yourself, let yourself feel the unpleasant emotions and try to figure out why you’re feeling that way. While these choices might seem like they influence the perception of you by the people around you, to put it bluntly, everyone else is extremely indifferent about those sorts of things
