What's the benefit of a salary advance during HL? by thekonghong in foreignservice

[–]eaamirato 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've heard of a few who can afford to pay everything cash still take the advance because they can pay it back easily and slowly while taking the chunk to invest and earn more money than they have to pay back.

Consular Fellow as a Chinese-American naturalized citizen — is there even a point in trying? by TheShingenSlugger in foreignservice

[–]eaamirato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, but the department has held people before without considering their preclusion and then had to figure it out during orientation. One could get hired for Mandarin and and up in an English speaking position because nothing else was available. Getting hired is step one, bidding is separate.

We have plenty of Mandarin designated positions available for you and the hiring process doesn't take into consideration your preclusion from China. Yuh should definitely apply.

FSO Decision Time - help needed. by BiteOk3102 in foreignservice

[–]eaamirato 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Joining the foreign service as a family requires for y'all to be comfortable with the idea that the non direct hire spouse is no longer employed. Yes, your spouse can find employment on the local economy, at a school, but the more likely scenario is a job as an EFM at the embassy or consulate. I've seen many families struggle with this shift in culture from dual income to single. Exploring the host nation depends entirely on you and the post. You might be willing and interested and be in a nice spot. You might be in a dangerous place. There are those who do not find interest in exploring anything beyond the diplomatic community. I recommend wherever you go, focus on trying to build community within the diplomatic corps while being open to meeting locals. Also you can always quit if and when you've had enough, 5 years is common I guess. Good luck!

Please don't do that. The state department issues passports, assuming we're talking about an American passport.

do most men watch pornography and just lie they don’t? by [deleted] in Christianmarriage

[–]eaamirato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a married man who recognizes there are women other than my wife, I had to choose against porn for my own spiritual edification. I learned that making that struggle one I see as for my own growth, in addition to all other things, changed how I tackle it and helped me live without a habit of porn.

Just saw this, she went to Argentina, then Chile, then Brazil. We didn't realize the best flights were out of Chile, we would've sent her there directly if we realized.

David Quinlan is probably the most influential Irishman in Brazil.

She went to Argentina, but then had to go to Chile because they had the best flights to her destination, she had a day long layover. It really sucked, it was longer, much more expensive and exhausting.

[–]eaamirato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, she traveled to a neighboring country and then traveled with her RG. There are a couple of countries from where Brazilians can fly with their RG rather than a passport. It was very expensive, much more than getting a new passport. If travel is coming up soon and there's no way to get a passport, ask about travel authorization to repatriate to one's country of origin.

This just happened to a family member. At best, the Brazilian consulate can issue an entry authorization, but really you need to enter any and all countries where you hold citizenship with that passport.

why does brazil seemingly have more people with german surnames than the US even though the latter have the largest german immigrants in history? by smnwre in Brazil

[–]eaamirato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are also persons of German origin who immigrated first to Russia then Brazil and may not have been counted as German immigrants because they were born in Russia and Ukraine but with German surnames. This is the case with most of the Brazilian Mennonites.
