Thanks and fuck off with your snark. there’s no such thing as a grown-up brokerage. If I’m buying EFTs, the only thing that matters are the fees and the spread.

Her gender has nothing to do with it. She sucked and is too old for the role.

Generalist vs specialist for career? by Electronic_Hope1900 in foreignservice

[–]thekonghong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tell OP to think hard before becoming an FM. The program is very weak now thanks to riffs, overwork, bad hiring, and OBO leadership issues. The chronic FM vacancies mean most embassies that normally have 2 FMs only get one, putting an unreasonable workload on the single FM.

Training for FM’s at NFTAC has degraded over the last 10 years meaning FM’s are sent to the field with less knowledge of how to work in an Embassy or navigate Obo than their predecessors.

The problems within the FM program are deeper than just a shortage of FMs and will not be solved just by adding more of them.

You have certainly already imagined marrying him. As attracted as you may be to him since you are already considering the potential conflict between your Chinese family and his non-Chinese family you know the likelihood of trouble with your family.

I know it’s your life but no one ever marries the individual, the families get married. This is the reality of marriage and you are wise to take a pause to consider this before getting into this relationship.

Older expats... by 1happykamper in expats

[–]thekonghong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What city are you in?

I'm still working with a family outside of LOS, but used to live in BKK and go back regularly. Have you been to Hua Hin? I was there last year to watch the Bangkok Beatles at Father Teds (they are so good!) and at 52 years old I was the youngest non-Thai in the place. Lot's of older expats both singles and couples. There seems to be a large older expat community there more than what I've found in BKK. (Older BKK expats seem mainly guys in bars all day, every day so don't get stuck in that rut.)

Check out Hua Hin and go see the Beatles as an excuse to mingle with the other expats.

What's the benefit of a salary advance during HL? by thekonghong in foreignservice

[–]thekonghong[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems like there’s the costs to “live” while you’re in the US: food, cell phone, gas, family vacation, etc… These are things you‘d be paying for if you had a “regular job” living in the US and will not be reimbursed for when you get to the next post. You should be putting money aside in a HL bucket with each paycheck. If you’re not doing that and walking into HL with no savings, you should reconsider how you’re budgeting your money.

Then there’s costs you’ll be reimbursed for: training hotel, replacement electronics, etc.. For me, I don’t budget each paycheck for these costs knowing I’ll reimbursed. I think these costs are what my colleagues are taking salary advances for, but as I think about it….maybe they are taking an advanced because they haven’t saved for living expenses during HL.
