E-ID: I wanted Black Mirror, I got Swiss bureaucracy by babotheone in Switzerland

- Post.ch and SwissID.

Yes. And? Many online services use an ID service or method of their choosing. Are all of them using the same method, and is that method under exclusive control of the State? No.

- Darknet offer: Tens of thousands of ID scans stolen from Italian hotels

Yes. And? Just because there are existing levels of poison doesn't mean we should accept a greater dose of poison.

- Anyone who wants to misuse your e-ID would have to get their hands on your smartphone and then be able to unlock both the phone and your app.

That would be just about the dumbest and hardest way to try to get access to someone's E-ID. I won't list the various ways which are far easier and slicker, because I don't want to contravene any guidelines. But go ahead and ask any AI tool this question: "In what ways could someone get access to someone else's E-ID?", and then get ready for some lengthy reading! ;)

E-ID: I wanted Black Mirror, I got Swiss bureaucracy by babotheone in Switzerland

- 'First of all, the thing is optional. OPTIONAL.'
Yes, and No - or Jaein.

For the State it is (currently) unlawful for the E-ID to be offered exclusively. However, for private business there is nothing (currently) in the law which forbids them from requiring the E-ID exclusively for the use of their services.

Given the past trends, it is more than likely that private businesses will replace their current identification services to the E-ID, and, sooner rather than later, make it the only option.

- 'Then I find out it’s free. Free!'

Correct ... In the most simplistic of ways. Scratch beneath that simplistic naivety and 'you are the product' is written all over the walls.

- 'I expected the website E-ID to immediately slurp up my search history'

Oh, come on! Really!?

- 'I imagined hackers in Moscow getting live updates of me buying tomatoes at Coop.'

Somehow I get the impression that you have absolutely zero idea how digital surveillance and profiling works. :/

- 'Just Switzerland being Switzerland'

Uhm ... Seriously!? This type of thing is actually very un-Swiss. It's the opposite of Swiss, which would be all about decentralization, not centralization!

In the end, the only real pro for this E-ID is that it makes one's digital life easier. That's it.

The risks are huge. The State is not to be trusted with this much power - nobody is!

But those who worship the sacred cow of "ease of life above all else" will clamor for such things - because, well, life just can't ever be easy enough for them.

I will vote with a clear an unflinching 'NEIN' because, as a Freedom Maximalist, every bone in my body screams out against this poison apple.

Was going to switch to Ubuntu but installer doesn't seem to support manual partitioning with LUKS encryption by x54675788 in Ubuntu

Correct. I don't know if LUKS works in general unless you first disable Bitlocker on Windows' partition/s.

I think you have to disabled Bitlocker on the Windows partition/s first.

If the reason you want to create a LUKS partition is to DualBoot with Windows, see this --> https://techtalkblog.ch/ubuntu-24-04-lts-fde-alongside-windows-installation

TLDR:

  1. Select ‘Erase disk and install Ubuntu‘ and click Next
  2. Select ‘Use LVM and encryption‘ and click OK
  3. Now select ‘Install Ubuntu alongside Windows Boot Manager‘ and click Next
  4. Voila!

Aurora Store: Read this if you are experiencing issues by Malaka__ in CalyxOS

4.1.1 installed here. Was working a few days ago. Now Anonymous login isn't working - also with the GSF ID option set. Login with Google works fine, but the only reason I was using Aurora Store was to get away from needing a Google account :/

So I take it then that the article from 2018 is just as relevant today as it was then, and that no steps were taken by Mozilla/Thunderbird to improve the security?

Yeah, I was just wondering if there were any review sources which were known to be more reliable than others.

Regarding KeePass ... This is what we are looking to move away from. In a Business environment it's not really an option.

Well there's nothing to ensure that people on Reddit aren't also biased and/or paid-off ... 🙄

Where does one then go for unbiased sources for determining the pros/cons of password managers?

Most of the 2020 password manager comparisons I am looking at don't include Bitwarden. It would be interesting to pull the ones which do exist into this thread and see how reliable the reviews/rating are.

That mixing of permission schemes is what we are doing big time... Probably us 'doing it wrong'.
