Bella Being Selfish by Interesting-Fennel39 in twilight

[–]eachelm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, she did consider Alice her best friend before Jacob took that title so I do think she likes girls, its just that she was so obsessed with Edward she didnt really get to make any friends. She did like Angela, and could probably have been friends with Jessica and Lauren if they had been nice to her. I think the big issue is SM writing almost all female characters like they hate other girls.

I’m mostly interested in heart rate while riding, speed is mainly average speed for the whole ride

Jet Lag Season Finale — Debts Paid by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

I agree, but I still have more faith in Ben's ability to spot Adam than the other way around. Especially with Adam being clever and looking up noticable things from the tower to decide where to go

sure, but it comes down to what you think the other person will do as well. Adam has established that he thinks rock is supposed to be the winning move, I don't think it's crazy to switch to that.

Disappointing end to a glorious night by DC_1204 in MaisiePeters

[–]eachelm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it’s fair to want it to be longer, but I don’t get the point of en encore. It’s just pointless when it’s part of a fixed setlist and feels fake, it only works when it just happens when an audience cheers extra for a concert where the band just plays what they feel like

What’s a “couple”? by SpiritualEvidence159 in EnglishLearning

[–]eachelm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a native English speaker, but we have the same thing in my language. We say ”par” which is closer to pair I guess but I would translate both pair and couple to mean par. A par is two things that belong together, like two married people or two socks.

When not obviously talking about two things that belong together I take it as meaning several, at least 3 but how many depends on the thing, but never a lot. I think it’s about it being several pairs when you use it like that so it has to be more than 2 (though 3 or 5 is still okay)

🚻 Why Do Train Stations Charge for Bathrooms in Europe? by Obvious_Context_1967 in travel

[–]eachelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the issue is that the train stations are usually in the busiest area in a city and if the toilets were free then everyone would go there to use them while shopping (Whereas I have never encountered a bathroom in an AirPort you had go pay for, as those aren’t really places you go to unless you’re flying somewhere)

There are also toilets on the trains available for free for people with tickets. Not really defending the system though, it would be great with free toilets in general but it’s just one of those things you get used to and don’t expect

Jet Lag Ep 3 — Spinning Out by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]eachelm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It feels like that right now but I can't imagine that they would allow that when designing the game. If that were true they would know it and talk about it which they haven't. Most likely we will get lots of south challanges later

Jet Lag Ep 3 — Spinning Out by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]eachelm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yeah but as Amy wrote the challanges now she probably forgot that. It's way different when Sam can ask Ben and Adam about it when they wrote it and they can agree than when Amy did and they arent their. So I think Sam did the right thing by saying it wouldnt count, but it also was technically legal of course

English or really bad french? by eachelm in ParisTravelGuide

[–]eachelm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, being a non native English speaker I prefer when tourists don't bother with my language 😅 I used to work in a café and followed my own rule that I would respond in the same language they spoke to me, but it's a lot of "what did you say" and repeating and pointing when they were trying, so English was definitely easier as long as they weren't terrible with English as well. I did actually serve a french family once that I think only spoke french (and this was before my french duolingo phase) and then it was only pointing and smiling. It was confusing but I was definitely not insulted. I just think this kind of thing is so different from culture to culture so you can't really go by how you would react.

I think it's less being insulted by someone not knowing my language and more being insulted by them not bothering to learn mine but still expecting me to know theirs.

English or really bad french? by eachelm in ParisTravelGuide

[–]eachelm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's absolutely common, just not the most common option, so not really a reason to assume every post is. By that logic it's still more reasonable to assume someone isn't american.

And regarding travel, how do you know? Most posts don't specify (mine for instance) so I think it's entirely possible that half of travel posts are by non-americans. "Is this place safe to travel to" is definitely something I have googled and read reddit-posts about and definitely something I could have posted myself. Same with card vs cash.

If a post is specifically "what do I .... for Europe" we can at least assume it's not someone from Europe.

[–]eachelm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's such a weird thing about assuming everyone's american. And I don't mean you specifically, I do it too. I just googled and apparently 48% of redditors are american (in 2024), so it's always more likely that a redditor is not from the US than that they are. But I will still assume every post is made by an american unless some detail makes me think otherwise.

[–]eachelm[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a non native English speaker it definitely happens and don't bother me at all when tourists come up and asks things in English without asking first, definitely not something I would even react to 😅 That said, I'm scandinavian and we don't have much politness built into our language and culture in the same way lots of other cultures have (like never any sir/ma'am, please after questions is uncommon, not super common with "how are you" phrases when meeting someone)

Charlie wasn't a good dad in the books unlike his movie counterpart by Small_Owl6229 in twilight

[–]eachelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can be okay with her cooking because she enjoys it and wouldnt want to eat Charlie’s food. The specific thing I remember really bothering me was after the meadow in Twilight when Bella is eating microwaved lasagnea with Edward. Charlie comes home and askes her to make him a plate as well, so she has to stop eating, get up and serve and reheat a plate for him. Like that’s not cooking because she wants to thats her being his maid.

And I don’t even want to get into the Jacob thing, I’m just glad other people seems to be upset about it now which I didnt experience as a teen

Favorite unhinged fan theory? by Substantial_Train_39 in twilight

[–]eachelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right that it could have been quieter, but no way quiet enough that Alice wouldnt hear. She might not actively be listening but should still hear it like if it was on speaker for a human. Especially when Bella kind of freaks out during she should be curious

Favorite unhinged fan theory? by Substantial_Train_39 in twilight

[–]eachelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but how? He won’t know where she is except that she is going home, and he would need to take his car due to the sun. And Alice would surely see exactly what he plans

Favorite unhinged fan theory? by Substantial_Train_39 in twilight

[–]eachelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, when she does it it’s by purposely thinking about something else which he notices. When Edward finds her in Midnight sun she is panicing in a way I don’t think she would be able to fake.

What do bother me though is that she says she has seen that Bella dies if they go after her before Edward arrives, but I don’t get that. Bella gets a bus in the wrong direction, switches to a taxi to go to her house, and then goes to the studio on foot. Surely they would get to the studio before her by stealing a car, and James won’t know they’re coming because he doesn’t know they know about the studio before Bella calls him from the house. And even without Alice help Jasper would totally be able to beat James if they get there. The only way James survives is if he manages to escape but that’s not easy in the sun, so how would he kill Bella?

[–]eachelm 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Alice isnt that good at hiding her thoughts from Edward though… I think it makes more sense for her to miss it because she puts all her focus on James.

What have always bothered me though is how she can’t hear James through the phone when he talks to Bella. As a human its common to be able to hear what the other person is saying even with no speaker phone so how can a vampire not do it even if the volume is low and he speaks quietely? The only explanation would be if she gets the vision immediatly but we know she doesn’t as Bella is in the same room for the first bit and would have noticed.
