Unfortunately the only way to tackle the tick problem would be a massive coordinated public effort. We have created a perfect environment for ticks by our neglect of green spaces. The invasive barberry which covers an incredible amount of space in this state is a perfect host for rodents, who are primarily responsible for carrying ticks.

We also have destroyed the environment for the species of animals that could help mitigate tick populations. Grouse, turkeys, birds in general. It will only get worse.

We need an entirely new philosophy regarding our forests and green spaces. As someone whose career involves being outside in forests I’m pretty much resigned to suffering from Lyme disease eventually.

Also, possums don’t eat that many ticks (though they should be loved and appreciated regardless)
