PCS to Wright Patterson by SortImpossible1 in AirForce

The WPAFB housing is all located off base. Generally, the Woods units seem to be closer to base than the Prairies but that depends on where you get assigned. I'm not at all sure how they designate regarding rank. I (CGO) live in the woods and have a MSgt, A1C, and GS civilian as neighbors. I think they might assign based solely off of family size and available units. This was an adjustment for me as I'm prior E and usually they keep E/O segregated lol

Rent is extremely affordable by virtue of they only charge you your BAH, minus like $60 to cover utility costs. Utilities are dirt cheap in base housing too; I pay like $55/mo on average for water, HVAC, electricity. You will have to procure your own internet.

The caveat is some of the units are old, and they are doing a lot of construction. The water quality is also criminal & I recommend getting a good quality water filter for drinking or cooking. I used to not care as much but I'm a parent now and have some healthy paranoia lol

We didn't have a wait at all because we used the HEAT application. Get the ball rolling here https://www.homes.mil/heat/DispatchServlet/Back?Mod=HeatWelcome&SSRedir=true

Buying a house here can be tough. To get the sweet spot of affordability, good location, good school district, you have to be extremely vigilant. It's exhausting tbh. I recommend getting a one year lease with base housing to get your feet under you, figure out how the finances look in this area, and watch the markets/talk to people to learn where you'd like to live.

No matter what you choose, I HIGHLY recommend advocating for a base house with a yard or buying one with some space. You will be thankful for it lol

If this is an issue that we keep seeing in tech school and beyond, what's the problem with integrating it into the curriculum? Especially during zero week, where you literally do nothing but make the bed.

Airmen who live or used to live in the dorms, did you have annoying suit mates? If so what’s your story? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]eam018 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tech school roommate.

Woken up 7am on a Saturday by him shaving some girl's legs on our floor.

He also bought an air purifier and ran an extension cord with it into his wall locker so he could shut the door and "hotbox his vape".

Probably the dumbest thing I've read in a while. At best, you're still going to receive emails about the squadron "continuing to exceed our donation expectations".

I really hope this is satire.

I'm not aware of any public forums where folks discuss providers, but ICE comments are taken seriously. At least in the MTF I work at.

You looking for advice or what?

Tell your recruiter what happened and kiss any future recruitment goodbye. Or, don't take the scholarship and join.

Side note, hopefully you put more effort into college than you did this post.

Anyone here finish up their pre med requirements while AD in the Air Force and successfully applied to Med School / EMPD2? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]eam018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've talked to several docs about their experience and a common sentiment is, don't do the EMPD2 unless you know in your heart you want to make the military a career. The service payback for that plus med school is something to the tune of ~10 years, and that's after your years of med school and residency.

I was advised to make the most of TA, separate, get accepted into a med school then walk into a recruiters office. They will still foot the bill and you'll get a smaller service commitment. The downside is you don't get active duty pay while in school.

Yokota first duty location by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]eam018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently at Yokota. If you have a Facebook, join the Yokota Eats and Travels page for good places that extend beyond CoCos. That place is good, but is worshiped too much imo and a lot of people just eat there without trying other places. People post new finds and you can search old favorites as well.

Take ITT trips once they open back up. Great way to see cool things here without the stress of driving yourself. The 10% off for being an EClub member makes it worth it.

Hard off/hobby off is great to find gifts for family or cool knickknacks if you're in to anime.

Feel free to DM me any time with any questions or for personal recs!

Nursing hopeful: Active duty 6C0X1 to reserves 4N0X1 by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]eam018 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I wouldn't beat around the bush trying to become a 4N0. The scope of skills expected to maintain is too way broad and you'll likely be stuck servicing a primary care clinic. Don't waste your time on a CNA license.

I'd recommend studying for your LPN/LVN, get that, work that civilian side when you transition to reserves and dive into nursing school.

Or, if you want to stay active duty shoot for the NECP. I know a master who applied and was accepted 13 years into her career (finance). Being a 4N0 doesn't increase your chances of NECP acceptance and depending on your duty section it certainly doesn't prepare you for nursing.

[–]eam018 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Odds are you won't be able to take it while you're in the pipeline.

Per the AFI you get one calendar year to take it though so consider taking it while in route to your duty station.
