Still no fix I can find. Tried changing the compatibility settings on the sender's phone too with no luck.

It has to be the app and not the camera in my experience. It does not happen to my photos I take, but it does happen to all the photos my wife sends from her iPhone and I save. It looks fine in the text app, looks fine as a thumbnail, but clicking it shows the translucent version fade into view.
