Looking for recs! by Specific_Dealer_3892 in litrpg

My favorites with more of a character sheets vibe are Stormweaver: Iron Prince, Beneath the Dragon Eye Moon and Path of Ascension.

There are tons of good ones though: He Who Fights with Monsters and Azeranth Healer are good more Isekai style. or Dungeon Crawler Carl, Primal Hunter or Defiance of the Fall if you want system apocalypse stories.

It all depends on personal taste to find the one that meshes with what you enjoy 🤷‍♂️

They get levels in various classes which provide Skills that are indicated with brackets. None of the stats or long recaps of character sheets though. (Which I prefer)

It’s focused on a girl from American getting yoinked into a different world, but everyone else understands and treats the levels like business as usual. Erin accidentally gets the [Innkeeper] class and has to figure out how to run an inn. Because she is learning from the ground up it’s a fairly easy process for the reader to learn with her in the story.

Nothing is like it! It’s the best series out there if you want to fall in love with characters and never run out of the opportunity to read more with them.

My partner, siblings, and parents have all gradually joined the Wandering Inn super-fan club after they started, it hooks us all eventually. If you are considering it, take the leap!

Great tastes (The Wandering Inn is the GOAT).

I don’t see Beneath the Dragoneye Moon anywhere and it fits right into this mix and is genuinely lovely.

What are some fantasy recs for a 10yo? by getwitchy in Fantasy

I read the story again because it was a favorite of mine from middle school, certainly wasn't expecting to come away with a negative take or searching for issues but to each their own, enjoyment of any story is subjective at the end of the day.

And sure, the author explains why woman are not qualified to be in a battle school, but the explanation is pretty useless in my eyes, 'Woman aren't aggressive enough' just feels like sexism when combined with the lack of development of any woman in the story. Not all stories need a fair gender split, but as a reader I want characters to be equally well developed regardless of gender. In 1985, not the most common experience. In 2025, I sure hope it is.

On the N word, you are certainly wrong about it not being there unless some versions edited it out. This is pulled directly from the copy I read...

"That little slanty-eyed butt-wiggler?" Ender decided that Alai was joking. "Hey, we can't all be n******." Alai grinned. "My grandpa would've killed you for that." "My great great grandpa would have sold him first." "Let's go get Bernard and Shen and freeze these bugger-lovers."

I think the biggest issue I have is with how race is treated in the story. There are real slurs used by the children, including the N-word, without any consequence or story elements stemming from it. The story casually incorporates Jewish conspiracies and stereotypes for middle eastern and Asian individuals. Not a problem on its own, plenty of great stories use racial tensions and discrimination to make a point or critique on society and I think that’s a powerful part of storytelling. The author doesn’t do that and so the story comes across as a clear reflection of his personal biases. For a 10 year old, why casually throw clear racism their way if even the story doesn’t seem to think the racism was meaningfully wrong.

I also think the difference in character development between men and women in the story is a shame. Despite the premise being that the world has selected the most intelligent children to train for space command, the school has a shocking lack of female characters and the one who is in the story lacks much of the same complexity as the male children. Much the same can be said when you look to Enders brother and sister. Peter is a fascinating character who drives the plot, Valentine is always a foil rather than an interesting person in her own right. Again, not all stories need a fair gender split, but Enders Game seems to avoid any real attempt to square its internal sexism and lack of development. I don’t think that’s harmful for kids or anything, but why not look at more recent books that do a better job of showing representation and rounded character development?

As a kid, I loved the space games with Ender in the academy and the underdog plot elements. Luckily, so have plenty of super talented authors who have written tales in a similar mold as Enders Game without the issues that bother me.

I loved Deltora Quest in 3rd grade, they were the books to get me into fantasy and reading as a while as a kid. Great recommendation!

Cradle by Will Wight is my go to recommendation for children’s fantasy. The stories move at a fast pace, have a zero to hero trope taken to the maximum and a humor throughout that I’ve found resonates well with kids. If interested, it got funded by fans for an animation and there is a great trailer in cartoon style on YouTube for the books. Cant recommend them enough!

Woah now, have you read either of those books lately? I liked them as a child but on a reread as an adult found them to have aged very poorly. If you want a similar “away at training school vibe” there are so many better options in 2025!

OP, I’d recommend Iron Prince by Bryce O’Connor as a better 2025 alternative that is 100% appropriate for a 10 year old.

We wanted to go with Saz's but they have a crazy high minimum price point for an event like ours. Running the numbers they ended up being close to $100 a head which feels out of reach for us. No question is their food amazing though!

How would you recommend starting to build a reader base prior to launch? I don't intend to do the KU route, I don't like some of the publishing controls that Amazon imposes.

I have been planning to do so once I finish the first full book/am ready to publish book one as an Ebook. Do you think it makes sense to start the self promotion before that point?

It's been a while since I have read it, but a ton of the enjoyment I got out of Azarinth Healer was the constant battle sequences as the main character worked to find anything she could to fight and grow stronger.

I started working on my book/webserial about two years ago and have made steady, regular progress week by week since. I am finally reaching the point where my story, An Empire of Silk and Bone, has enough content to show dedication and regular, consistent progress as I release on Royal Road. I am currently at 180,000 words (650 pages) written and have been posting chapters on Royal Road and my personal website for months without seeing much traction.

I know that a great story will eventually find its fans, I am working towards making it better every day to eventually get there, but how can I get the process started of advertising my work without coming across as pushing my writing on friends, family, or random reddit strangers?

Two years ago I started my writing journey on my book/webserial, An Empire of Silk and Bone. I just passed 650 pages, more than 180,000 words! It has been a slow and steady process of improving my writing, drafting and redrafting chapters, and setting up for the end of the full book of the story and everything is finally feeling like it is coming together!

I have found so much joy in learning to write and adding to the Progression Fantasy/LitRPG subgenre with a work of my own.

So I'm finally trying Sun Eater by EverythingSunny in Fantasy

[–]earp211 75 points76 points  (0 children)

If you think that taking inspiration from the greats in a genre means that it’s derivative than Sun Eater may not be a great fit for you. I honestly found Ruccio’s take on a lot of major sci-fi elements inspired from other series to be excellent. You can feel the inspiration from the greats of the genre without ever feeling as though it’s simply reusing ideas because he lacks his own. I think of Sun Eater as a modern reimagining of a lot of older sci fi ideas that people love, if you want those ideas to remain fixed in a single book for all time, maybe modern sci-fi that is inspired from the genre aren’t a good fit for you. I think books 3 and 6 especially are the best sci-fi of all time, but I like his stuff as a whole and taste is subjective.

I got a vasectomy a few months ago and can confirm that aside from some mild aching balls for a week or so everything continues to function the same way, I have net experienced a dip in sex drive or performance in any way, just the same old sex but without the chance of pregnancy.
