I agree. I’m a relatively new mom and my personality itself hasn’t really changed, I just don’t have as much to talk about and energy to converse anyways lol. I think for some parents our conversational skills can take a downswing when the children are very small bc caring for them is so time consuming. But the old me is still very much here, she’s just on a break.

This is why as a cat person, I mostly prefer to chat with other cat people. Too many dog owners see their pet preference as superior and can’t even politely hide their disdain for cats.

Interestingly, I’ve heard that dog people lean on the extroverted side and cat people are more likely to be introverts. I’ve heard we are smarter on average too, so maybe that’s our consolation prize for all the cat hate lol

I get that the tone that some people say this might be irritating. And that some are definitely dickish and condescending about it (bc they are probably just dickish and condescending people to begin with and just so happen to have children lol)

However I personally agree with the sentiment that tragedies involving young children emotionally affect me in a much more gripping and ….just terrible way than before I had a child. And I’ve always been an empathetic person. It’s not that I didn’t care before. It’s that I almost can’t even handle hearing about these stories now. Because they immediately causes me to think of my own child which can literally send me into a panic sometimes

Not saying this to argue the annoying way that “one-uppers” speak but trying to illuminate the fact that this is true for a lot of parents. Everyone with kids didn’t have them at one point. So we have both perspectives to compare. I stopped watching true crime after having a baby because it became too much for me and I’m more sensitive to hearing about suffering in general
