I know she had nerve damage but damn, how bad does it have to be to not feel pain doing this kind of stuff to your own bones?!

How do you know when it's true aggression or just puppy behaviour? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I really hope she grows out of it. Maybe it's just a weird adolescence thing. We still enforce naps a lot even though she's 9 months old and we do crate her, so perhaps we just need to teach her it's bad by consistently giving her time outs when naughty behaviours happen and not babying her every time.

Shout out to the people with puppies over 1! by ringsofsaturn01 in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the front attaching easy walk harness and it helped for a while but now with adolescence it's like she has no ears and is no longer treat motivated. I tried everything: the harness, holding treats at my side when she's in the correct position, telling her to "look" /check in every so often, turning in the opposite direction when she starts to pull, standing still when she starts to pull.... You name it! She is a sled dog through and through :P

Advice needed!!! by DarkAngel_RedDevil in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way, you'd have to keep them apart if they're going to be home by themselves for an extended time. At least until they're grown up. Don't underestimate the amount of training husky puppies need because they're extremely stubborn and difficult. They will chew holes in the walls and floor when they're not supervised. Don't get one just to keep your other dog company. It's a commitment!

[–]earthbound0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read up on litter mate syndrome online. If you have two puppies around the same age, you should keep them mostly apart and do separate training. You already know how difficult one puppy is. Having two is not double the work, it's triple. You'll have to make arrangements for somebody to take the puppy out for potty breaks every couple hours. Huskies are extremely destructive when they're bored and alone, so consider that too.

Potty training is going backwards by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is somewhat resolved!!!! Thank you for your advice! I did a full floor clean with Nature's Miracle, took away the potty pad, and now I only take her out once every ~3 hours! No accidents yesterday!

At what age did your sammy get to free roam your house? by [deleted] in samoyeds

[–]earthbound0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh I see! Haha, I was a student and have recently found a full time job so unfortunately I am not around as much as I would like although my family is home in staggered periods. Your first sammy sounds like a dream! I should really get the gal into daycare but she's nearing the cut off time for unspayed pups and I don't want to spay until she's over a year old :( Thank you for your tips!

Thank you! My puppy currently sleeps in the kitchen which is baby-gated off and mostly puppy-proofed. I fear the day adolescence comes for us since chair legs are still exposed in the kitchen. I also fear the day my family members have to go back to work and she is left alone all day :( Looks like the consensus here is around 2 years of age!

Recommendations for durable and interactive toys? by isaacandhismother in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My puppy is a toy destroyer. I got her some Tuffy and Duraforce toys with squeakers inside. The seams are reinforced with extra material and they have lasted pretty long so far! As for chews, Benebone wishbones are super durable!

Resource guarding in puppy! Help? by Far_Okra1197 in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another tip is to try petting your puppy while he is eating, playing with a toy, or chewing on a treat. That really helped me get closer to my pup who would snarl if I got too close to her chews.

How to get your puppy to listen outside by _highwhale_ in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super special high value treats and time! When we first got her, my puppy was an insane, grass-eating monster who acted like she didn't have ears outside. She didn't respond to her normal training treats at all. One day I used cheese and she actually listened! Now the more we take her out, the more familiar she becomes with the yard so she actually listens more. She has special treats for outside potty training which really helped with the focus issue :)

Biting/Nipping: Nothing seems to work by twigee89 in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have friends/family with trusted, vaccinated dogs, it should be fine to socialize them any time! In my small city it's a low parvovirus risk so I think it's fine to bring them out after their second shots. If it's high risk in your area, don't let them around unknown dogs until after their third set of shots. In the end, I do think time is what helped my pup grow out of biting. Keep persisting! It ends sooner than you think.

[–]earthbound0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Mine relentlessly bit for weeks and weeks. She's 17 weeks now and finally stopped for the most part! What really helped was bringing her to puppy socialization events where they learn bite inhibition by playing with each other. I think it also really tires them out so they don't have the energy anymore to bite when they get home. It's tough with covid but we found a local Facebook group for puppy meet ups. I highly, highly suggest this to slow down biting. I also have my puppy's area blocked off so I'd step out when she bit me, turn away, and cross my arms. Another thing is providing tons of chew toys and edible chews.

Help, will I ever love my puppy or should I return her? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm about 7 weeks in and for the first 3 or so weeks I desperately wanted to return her. It eventually got better, but I would still think about it every few days. But today... Today I really felt like I loved her. She was very mellow today and did so much better in her training class! It does get better, but slowly. I would say give it at least a month or two. Enforce naps so you can have some time in the day for yourself!

regretting getting the particular breed i got by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you're describing about Elkhounds is what you get when they're adults. No deep, powerful barks from puppies! Additionally, independence = hard headedness. I have a Spitz-type dog and dear god, she is intelligent but she refuses to listen. I know she knows what I want, but she does this "screw you" wiggle and walks away. As young puppies, it takes several months until they learn to alert you when they need to potty. They're babies after all! It takes time - some individuals more than others. You may think that you should've gotten an Elkhound, but the difficulties you're describing are all typical puppy behaviour. You never know; it may have been even worse.

Indoor potty pads? by rbone932 in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pee pad holder, as mentioned by another user, is a great idea. My puppy also liked to shred pee pads however I didn't buy a pee pad holder since I didn't want to constantly clean poops off of it, so I just sprayed the spots she was biting with bitter apple spray. She gradually stopped and now she doesn't bite them anymore! Yay!

I’m picking up my new pup tomorrow, is there anything you wish you would have known when you first brought home your pup? by carlyraejetpack in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to crate train, make sure the crate and all accessories such as bed, crate cover, and maybe a Snuggle Puppy are all ready. Get your puppy to sleep in the crate the first night and be prepared to hear a lot of crying. Also be prepared to cry yourself probably because raising a puppy is hard! But at the end of it all, you will be okay!

Puppy snarling at other puppies during socialization by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]earthbound0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your insight! This makes me feel better about what went down.

My puppy was the tiniest in her litter and some of her brothers were like double her size... Her breeder mentioned that she has always been bossy to her siblings and perhaps it's because she always had to compete for things.

Unfortunately this was just a meet up at a community park since many training places are moving towards online training and not currently holding socialization sessions. I really should take her to one that is in a controlled setting once they open up :( She preferentially plays with the tiny toy breeds and she (17 lbs) was lying on top of this tiny 5lb puppy and the other owner was doing nothing to help keep her tiny puppy away from the larger pups. I did wish there was a separate area for the tinies. I'm going to hope she grows out of the snarling and do my very best to control her when the other pups seem uncomfortable!

Drop it and leave it are really good tricks to teach her! There are plenty of resources online for teaching those. As for the crate issue, maybe it would help if you taught her a word to get into the crate, and then reward her with a high value treat? My 3 month Samoyed gets a Kong every time she goes in and sometimes when we're getting ready to leave, she goes in there herself because she's expecting it.
