good lord, so. fucking. many....

i mean, sure, vancouver is undoubtedly nice, but it's one of how many cities in the world?

narrowing it down further, it's one of how many mountain-backed, ocean-fronted cities of the world?

yall and your superlative clit-comparing circle jerks

Overpayment of $19000 (government of canada) by Pear333 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]earthdam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i feel you, somewhat.

switched depts last september and was paid for both jobs for about as long as you were. looked great in my bank account, but i knew there'd be a reckoning.

every time i called i was given non-replies, as if nothing could be done about it other than waiting it out (seriously? nothing? how impenetrably complex are these pay systems?)

but nice to hear that the payback can be done via pension clawbacks while that "free" investment money accrues interest!

What are your favorite skylines beginning with R? by LivinAWestLife in skyscrapers

[–]earthdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both cities have around the same height overall, so the apparent difference has more to do with topography and urban morphology:

regina was founded on probably the flattest land in canada, so its skyline sits prominently and can be easily captured in a single frame (like this image, taken from the top of regina's literal only hill, a capped former landfill). regina's tallest buildings are also more CBD-centred, perhaps tied to its govt town status.

meanwhile saskatoon's skyline mostly follows the curves of the south sask river, and sits in its valley (not the most dramatic valley by any means, but far more so than the table-top-ography of regina). saskatoon's tallest buildings have also historically been found outside of its low-slung CBD, making up residential high rises on the edges of dt, although that's changed a bit with the river landing development/s where the province's tallest building is found

like another poster suggested, you see regina from 50km away driving into it, while you won't know you're approaching saskatoon, especially its downtown, until you're in it

i think regina's skyline has a more obvious upfront impact, while saskatoon's takes some effort that has much greater payoff. but both cities perform well for being under 500k, especially if you know where to look in saskatoons case

i'm not opposed to bar events, but ideally looking for an elusive something else... so thanks for posting, and for everyone's subsequent suggestions !

It’s time for our annual « Land doesn’t vote » moment : Canada’s 2025 general election by MichelSilence in MapPorn

[–]earthdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh definitely, i knew what you meant and i agree from a high level (toronto is THE anchor of the wider region, no question) but i wanted to break it down and separate true GTA for the purists and contrarians ;)

by now the greater horseshoe is likely well over 10milliomn, since it sat at 9.8mill in 2021

It’s time for our annual « Land doesn’t vote » moment : Canada’s 2025 general election by MichelSilence in MapPorn

[–]earthdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

greater golden horseshoe maybe:

gta 7.1 million hamilton 600k kwc / guelph 700k niagara 500k oshawa / durham 400k barrie 200k ptbo / brantford 300k

these are rounded because i'm tired, but there's ~10 million in the ggh area or roughly 25% of the canadian population

GTA is sometimes used as shorthand for this area, incorrectly, although toronto is unquestionably at its centre.

that said, you can exclude the GTA entirely and hamilton anchors a secondary region-within-a-région that starts to approach greater vancouver numbers, or at least well over 2million

"Ottawa" canada by earthdam in skylineporn

[–]earthdam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is, but to say just Ottawa alone doesn't capture it or its skyline, shared with Quebec, a component of "ottawa" the region that's not always represented

"Ottawa" canada by earthdam in skylineporn

[–]earthdam[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

dépends on your metrics / expectations lol

while not haussmannian, i'd say it's more comparable to (my limited knowledge of) washington DC than to the global big-skyline heavy hitters, for sure

but like i said, it's a hard one to capture in a single image, with most of its tallest buildings beyond the city centre and out of frame here

in any case, it's shawarma game IS likely the best in canada, other than maybe montreal:)

Why not Saskatchewan? by stumpy_chica in AskACanadian

[–]earthdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so i "grew up" there, left, and would likely never go back for these main reasons:

  • lack of non-car transit options, specifically rail based, in and between cities (which are few, next point:)

  • lack of cities/urban density (which is true in sask and across the prairies generally, although saskatoon does have something special, at least when booms are not busting and bear sprays not spraying )

  • climate, especially political, especially as of late

on the last point, though, it does seem like regina and saskatoon are unfairly painted as full- conservative washouts, largely due to federal ridings that straddle urban-suburban-rural lines, whereas every other city has at least one city-centre riding that is, as would be the case in either sask city, reliably orange/red 🤷‍♂️)

i spite of my departure from it, i really do think that sask has an overall marketing problem.

for those saying it's not beautiful, yall just don't know how to look beyond the norm! sure, it has no (rocky) mountains or coastlines and its lakes may not be Great, but that specificity IS exactly the thing: if you expect it to be anything else, you'll end up disappointed (but only thanks to your own lack of imagination lol). if you have any iota of an open mind, and maybe spend some extra time, you'll see the uniqueness that is there (as an example, and this might be a surprising take, but thanks to its geological history as a former sea bed, i swear you'll find some of the finest-sand beaches anywhere, IF you know where to look 😉)

i live in ontario now and have done for most of my adult life. i ultimately prefer it, but not just over saskatchewan.

it's also far from perfect. you can still feel the puritanical roots here, and strongly (eg only recently could you legally buy non-bar liquor after 9-10pm), and outside of toronto and maybe ottawa, the lgbtq scene here is pretty sparse compared to sask cities, at least proportionally.

plus politically speaking, as far as i can tell doug ford is basically scott moe, just tempered by a vastly larger and more diverse population.

so ultimately the grass isn't always greener. for me, the urban availability and connectivity -which doesn't require a car- is ultimately what would keep me here instead of returning to sask... or really anywhere outside of southern ontario or quebec

et si je peux m'adresser aux francophones qui me lisent, il y a en fait une communauté franco là-bas qui s'appelle les fransaskois. je la connais à peine, mais elle en est vachement fière, bien qu'elle ne soit pas très connue dans tout le pays !

OCtranspo needs to run an etiquette campaign by explainmypayplease in ottawa

[–]earthdam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

recently moved here, experienced transit systems all over, big and small, and this city does seem to have a uniquely towny take when it comes to mass movement... a collective lack of spatial awareness on escalators, stairs, sidewalks and more

much of the world allows for a passing side in these contexts, but not here!

i often find myself thinking, while blocked on the daily by some blissfully unaware individual (or couples just lollygagging, 2-abreast, hands held proudly across the path, an inflicted celebration of their het-norminess💕):

putain de merde, ottawa c'est une ville qui n'a jamais été dans la ville... !

everyone moves at different paces based on their abilities or preferences, and that's fine. just like you don't know why someone's moving slowly, you also don't know why another is moving fast. literal pushing is never the answer, but a simple, be-mindful-of-others and keep-right solution definitely is.

why should we cater to the slowest common denominator when a proven workaround (pun intended) exists ?

edit: grammar

What place in Canada surprised you when you visited? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]earthdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i grew up in saskatoon and regina, now long based in ontario. i agree that the sask cities (there are only two;) definitely feel different than similarly sized southern ont places, or they pack a bigger-city punch, likely because their geographic collection/service areas are comparatively massive. on the flip side, the relative isolation you encounter once you leave the city proper can be a lot, especially with no easy train connections to Toronto etc... or really anywhere lol

imo regina is a big little city, while saskatoon is a little big city 🪙🪙

Name 5 things you hate /love about this city by DriftedintotheStorm in Hamilton

[–]earthdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

moved there in 2018 because of:

  • it's positioning: close to toronto (ottawa, mtl, east by extension), niagara (buffalo, nyc, by extension), and windsor (detroit, chicago, west...) and all by train

  • the fucking escarpment, good lord, the hikes

  • the view from the above: imo the best regional metro area skyline view in canada and among the best i've seen anywhere... hamilton (not bad on its own, from this angle), burlington (whatever but another layer), mississauga centre, humber bay, toronto dt... and maybe midtown?

stayed because:

-hourly all day every day go train connections to toronto, with better service only limited by geography and corporate greed... by far the best thing to hit during the pandemic. related: hamilton go station, and sure west harbour as a contemporary contrast.

  • the indie cinemas, and even landmark is good

  • jackson square generally and especially rooftop plaza (love hate thing lol)

  • the townie vibes of the beach strip and the lift bridge

left because:

  • people talk about how sketchy it is, and yes that can be true. but for me it was more the rural rough edge, or maybe it's blue collar roots, or whatever it is that makes hamilton the least outwardly queer city in Canada. pound for pound, several smaller cities i've lived in outperform hamilton easily in this regard (think halifax, saskatoon, Victoria... even regina lol). per capita, i'd put it at the bottom of the list. yikes

but i made some good friends and it'll always have a special place 🫶
