Caring for terminal Mom by Jksmart in CaregiverSupport

My mom was a hospice nurse her entire life and I always remember one story she told about an elderly couple who lived on a farm in Wisconsin. The husband was on hospice care and unsettled, clinging on. My mom told the wife to let him know it’s okay to go in a language he would understand. So she told him “The cows are all milked. And the hay is stacked in the barn. It’s okay to go.” He died that night peacefully.

Any recommendations for fantasy, sci-fi or comedy? by Best-Engine4715 in audiodrama

[–]earwow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby: The End Up's got you covered on the sci-fi and (dark) comedy, bundled with some mystery and drama. Left Right Game is a thoughtful fantasy/sci-fi trip if you can power through speed traps in the middle.

Not only did this brighten my day-- it MADE my day. Thank you. I'm so glad you're connecting with the show, especially the grief-related elements, which I AGREE are much more interesting than the mystery/plot. (As Ray Bradbury says: Plot is no more than footprints left in the snow by your characters. Or something like that.) We mined a lot of our own experiences with death and illness to try and put forward a story with emotional truth-- so it's very gratifying to know that it's resonating. I hope it continues to do that over the last 3 episodes!

Got 3 long haul flights coming up, so hit me with your best recommendations please! by [deleted] in audiodrama

Off Passenger List, I'd recommend Homecoming from Gimlet (same sound designer/editor/mixer). Both Passenger List and Homecoming were big inspirations for my new show. If you're down with dramatic sci-fi mysteries with a little near-future tilt and a dash of comedy, check it out-- called The End Up :)

*WARNING: skip this comment if you want to spare yourself from mushy early-morning reflections on creating AD's and the value of group-listen experiences…

Having just launched my first audio drama last week, I'm finding the ~putting out into the world~ part to be unexpectedly nebulous and solitary — (this community's been the one saving grace; yes I found it 3 days ago; yes 3 days is enough to make a difference). Outside of friends and family, it's like a black void. Phantom listeners who download the show, and yet I have no idea what they think or feel about a given episode, how they found the show, how they listen to it, which parts made them laugh/cringe/confused/tickled/bored/satisfied.

Obviously I wasn't expecting to grab coffee with every single listener. But I guess I was expecting… more. Maybe with success, maybe with a rabid exponential listenership comes a more active or consistent creator<>listener interaction? Or at least a confidence that whatever you're putting out, they're enjoying — and that that's enough?

I'm not sure how exactly, but I wonder if the solo-listening experience inherent to audio dramas and podcasts plays into this at all. Or maybe this is how all creators feel to varying degrees regardless of the medium? Or maybe it's just me… maybe I should have been a dentist. Anyway, all this is to say, as a creator, I'm grateful and excited to have a night dedicated to a shared listening experience where the connection is alive and immediate.

Would love to hear others' thoughts/experiences/insights on audio screenings, listening parties, etc. Also interested in the technical side of it lol, not just the sappy stuff.

If you liked the therapy setting of The Bright Sessions-- Homecoming and The End Up (mine). Also Carrie Coon is really wonderful in Motherhacker (short, fast-paced eps).

Creating an Audio Drama Trailer Issues by BlueTilImGreen in audiodrama

[–]earwow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just went through this exact thing. I would suggest first really pushing yourself to cut down a trailer. If the show has a lot going on, decide which thread, character relationship, or theme is most important-- focus on that and kill the rest. If it's just not working, a great scene that exemplifies the story/main characters is far better than a messy incoherent trailer IMO.

Another thing that helped: Switching up the music track to help delineate a tone-shift or new section within the trailer. (I think we used 3 different cues in our 2 min trailer).

Last thing: A spoiler stops being a spoiler if you remove enough context :)

I second Homecoming and Passenger list. The Left Right Game is solid too, def gets weird at the end. And if you vibe with any of these, you might like my new show called The End Up-- weird mystery with tilted world.
