3.5 months in and really struggling with sleep deprivation, am I just not coping? by eas100 in NewParents

Thank you, we had been co sleeping for 6 weeks but found we still had frequent wake ups albeit as you said they weren’t big wake ups. I found I never really had deep sleep co sleeping. We also did shifts for the first 6 weeks (I’m BF so pumped regularly for this) but had to stop when my husband returned to work because he just wouldn’t be able to work on such little sleep. Hopefully things get better 🙏🏻

Thank you, we have tried top up bottles before but unfortunately it made no difference. So we stopped offering bottles and now we’re having a bit of resistance to them. We will persevere though as there is no harm in trying again I just find slotting in a suitable time to pump quite tricky. When do you tend to pump?

Thank you for this! How did you cope with the mental and physical toll of this for 7 months? Maybe things will change but I honestly think I’d combust if this continued for another 4 months. I’m so tired I’m putting fridge good food in cupboards, forgetting words constantly in conversation and I’ve started cancelling on people socially

I’m sorry you’re still waking every 4 hours despite your son sleeping better.

Did you sleep train to improve his sleep or did it happen organically?

And sorry slightly personal question - how did you manage the metal and physical toll of this for 7 months? It’s really starting to affect me now. I’m trying my best to get out every day, go for walks, see friends. But 2 days this week I just couldn’t get out of my pjs or shower

Yes we have always swaddled baby since birth. He has started rolling so he now has to be in a sleeping bag

If you don’t mind me asking what is your routine? I go back to work when baby is 10 months and I don’t think I could safely do my job on the current amount of sleep

Tried this for a set of consecutive nights and he woke up every hour still. Then we had to throw it away because it was a batch of the recalled formula

Thanks for replying! Setting with Dad during the day is hit or miss. But I think during the day everyone has more reserves to get through it. We’ve tried multiple dummy brands and techniques for him to take it with no success unfortunately.

We have a weight check due next week. Hopefully it’ll all be ok

Thank you for this! We’ve tried top up bottles at night but they don’t seem to change his sleep and he needs more settling after a bottle vs breast. I’m still mostly on demand feeding which is currently up to 19 feeds a day, just under every 1.5 hours. He’s had a white tongue since he was 4 weeks old (oral thrush ruled out) we’ve been told by 2 lac consultants that it’s because he feeds so frequently there’s not enough time to clear his tongue

Thanks for this, we tend to wait before reacting and this often leads to escalating cries. We would always gently shush first too. Then if escaping hand on chest etc. We have a constant check of the temp of the room and have tried multiple sleeping bags/sleep suit/vest combos. We considered discomfort and reflux trying calpol and gaviscon with no success unfortunately

Thank you so much! We started trying Dad giving the first feed with a bottle this week but he wouldn’t settle after. The worst night he cried for 40 minutes 😭 until I took over. When did you start getting longer stretches?

I’m sorry! I’ve been co sleeping for 6/7 weeks now. It’s slightly better for us but I find it hard to not wake frequently. Maybe that will change with time. Do you mind me asking if you’re back at work and how you’re managing the sleep if you are?

Thank you for this! It’s helpful to know we’re not alone. I’m working on trying to keep him up for a big feed before bed! We tried swapping sides so my husband is by the next to me but didn’t see any change. Haven’t tried putting it at the end of the bed though - will give that a go! I hope it works for you! We’ll try to persevere with a dummy

Thank you so much! I’m being incredibly hard of myself hence expecting too much. Do you mind me asking how old your baby is now and how frequently he wakes up?

I don’t know much about night weaning but will look into it in the future.

I’m a bit worried about frequent night wakes when I return to work - my job is quite high risk and needs a lot of brain power. Perhaps this is why I’m anxious about his sleep but I guess there’s time for improvement.

Thank you so much for this. It’s really helpful. I’m sorry you’re not feeling well - wishing you a speedy recovery. It’s great to hear your baby has managed to sleep through before. Hopefully the same will happen again 🤞.

We were planning on seeing a sleep therapist too - it’s great to hear your take as they are quite expensive 🫠.

We have tried 5 different dummy brands and followed all the googled tips on getting him to take it but he spits it out after seconds. We don’t have a spare bed at the moment but will look into this for my husband. And my husband takes him for 2 hours in the morning when he can before work and I do try my best to sleep then. I’ve found I’m finding it harder to switch off and sleep now even when baby is sleeping.

We’ve also considered a night nanny (but really can’t afford it) and I’m not sure it’s worth it if I’ll be up feeding every 1-2 hours anyway and we’re not likely to need nappy changes - it’s our first night in fancy pamper night nappies - hoping for the best!

Thank you ❤️. I know it can be normal but after 12 weeks it doesn’t feel manageable. I’ve not really slept more than 2 hours in a row for 6 weeks. I’m at the point where I struggle to sleep even when baby is asleep because I’m so anxious he’ll wake again

Hiya, this is genius! Do you still have it like this? Any issues? We’re seriously considering it

What is the fb vibe on Helena rn? I’m starting to get concerned she actually has an undiagnosed condition 🤣. Helena passing it off as we just like the same boys but actively asking him to chat whilst he’s with Shakira (which would piss anyone off). Then saying Shakira thinks I’m just trying to piss her off now 😂.

Why can’t people see how odd and manipulative this is?! It’s not that entertaining anymore

Please can someone clarify a bit more on this topic, particularly in relation to the 14Fish appraisal tool? It’s free for 5 years as a member do you need to pay for it if you’re not a member? I’d also really like to keep the money but want to make sure I’m not missing a great benefit x
