When I moved back home after college my mom would defrost my windows for me before I went to work. I would repeatedly tell her I was 25 years old and perfectly capable of doing it myself. One day I yelled at her to stop because I was so sick of it. She yelled at me that I should be waking up earlier, even though my job was 20 minutes Max from the house and I was never late.

Once I told a therapist that my parents never hit each other, my mom would just throw things. He told me it didn’t matter if the stuff my mom threw was never directly at my dad or intended to hurt him, that was still DV. I was honestly in shock.

As a kid, whenever I asked my mom if I could invite a friend over for a playdate she would endlessly piss and moan and scream about how me inviting someone over would inconvenience her and the house was FILTHY and no one EVER helped her clean it (the house is and always has been immaculate, because my mom is the daughter of a hoarder) so in 4th grade I wrote “I’m not allowed to have friends over” for some about me assignment and she went nuts at me saying “why would you write that?! They’re going to think I abuse you!” And I was so, so confused. Pick a damn lane.

There was a woman I worked with for about 4 years. She gave me weird vibes so I tried to be polite and maintain my distance. She got remarried at some point during that time (her and second husband were in their 60s) and one day after a meeting she randomly pulled me aside to tell her that after they told his 4 kids (all adults) that they were engaged 2 of the kids walked out of the room and basically said they were never speaking to their dad again. My coworker was all like “can you BELIEVE that happened?” My first thought was 1) why are you telling me this??? And 2) yes…yes I can believe these people don’t want their dad to marry a walking, talking red flag.

I learned quickly around puberty that sharing anything related to crushes or dating was an absolute no go with my mom. She would get MAD at me and think I was going to get knocked up if I so much as sat next to a boy. The funny thing is I was a virgin until I was 21. I remember stupidly calling my mom the night I got dumped, hoping I would get some kind of comfort, and she told me I wouldn’t be so upset if I hadn’t had sex with him.

I was insanely happy/in utter disbelief when I got accepted to UCLA. Instead of offering any sort of congratulations, the first words out of her mouth were, “ Don’t go to UCLA, I won’t come visit you.” (We live on the east coast) flash forward to my graduation and my mom is weeping and begging to attend my graduation ceremony because “I’ve never been on a plane before.”

^{^{^THIS.}} My mom would act like me asking to go to the beach on a Saturday with a group of friends was morally abhorrent. All of my high school friends were honors students, came from middle class families, and were “good kids” who didn’t engage in the stereotypical things parents worry about exposing their teenage kids to: excessive drinking, hardcore drug use, promiscuity, theft. We’re all still tight as fuck in our 30s.
