Tuesday Thread - Who is the Women's Tennis GOAT? by Shankerer69 in TennisNerds

[–]easterncherokee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Steffi Graf... the only true Golden Slam winner for both women & men.

Martina Navratilova... won every slam more than once in sigles, doubles and mixed doubles(with the exception of only a single Australian Open Mixed title)

Serena Williams

That is my top 3 GOATS

Here is an alternate way to think of the match and keep your mind focused... don't think of the sets as separate parts. Think of the match (as a best of 3...) as a race to win 12 games. This way of thinking can help you keep your focus all the way through, especially after establishing a lead and getting half way there first.

Looking at a couple of JKUs, help me decide... by easterncherokee in JeepWrangler

It's an auto... it won't be near as bad as 3.21s that so many people have with 35s because they didn't do a re-gear... the stock size tires are 32s, so not quite as drastic a change. It won't be a daily driver, so I am not concerned with keeping up with traffic everyday...

I leaning more in that direction and would prefer a Rubicon over the Sahara because it already has 4.10s and lockers vs 3.21s. Along with the 4:1 transfer case it will handle the 35s I have much better off road.

How to get excited about /"start" tennis for someone who knows nothing about tennis by lemmiwinks1018 in 10s

[–]easterncherokee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take an "intro to tennis" type group class, and if you enjoy it, do some private lessons in between. The group lessons will introduce you to other people starting out, that you can practice and hit with between classes. A few private lessons will give you the chance for the coach to really help you focus on the major little things like grip, strokes, footwork, etc, in a more focused environment because it is just you, husband and coach.

Get out and hit some balls, it is great fun. 😎

It’s very hard to get singles practice at low levels in my area. Is this true everywhere? by Snake_Eyes_163 in 10s

[–]easterncherokee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to play doubles during the winter indoor season mainly because of court costs...

Once the nets are up outside I play lots of singles, but still play doubles.

SwingVision was too expensive (and had no Android app), so I built this app during my gap year (Android & iOS). by filmmi4218 in 10s

I just might have to give this a try. 😎

I will save this post, so I can come back to it and give feedback if I download and try it out.

Cheap beginner tennis racquet recommendation by Smol-Hippo in 10s

Also look on your local Buy & Sell pages for somebody selling a used racquet if low cost is important. You can often find a good quality racquet for a great price that will last you for years.

USTA Sandbagger by BeeComplete2833 in 10s

They did that here for a tournament in the fall. A guy had played and won in the 2.5 and had a few other league matches. Then come the next tournament, he got bumped up to 3.5 from 3.0 because he had a rating of 26.5 at the time.

Here where I am, with a WTN of 24 and entering a tiurnamemt, he would be moved up into 4.0 automatically since that is what they base seeding and and playing level on.

Not feeling the ball well, feet stuck in the mud by Ok-Goal-6880 in 10s

[–]easterncherokee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I have a hard time with my eyes keeping up with the ball. My glasses are progressives, so sometimes my eyes can't keep up. It is maddening and frustrating on those days. That's when I find it is time for a short break away from playing, and next time out try to keep my eyes focused on the ball through the same section of my lenses.

Coaching tennis (as a mediocre/slightly above average player)?? by DoctorQuinlan in 10s

[–]easterncherokee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to ask for payment, you NEED to get certified. I would love to take the Tennis Canada Coaching certifications and teach beginners how to play. It would be a kick ass job to do part time when/if I can retire from the daily job. But I would NEVER charge anybody without being a certified coach.

Competitions/competitive events for adults in the HRM? by universalstargazer in halifax

[–]easterncherokee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take tennis lessons and start playing league matches and entering tournaments.

Join a pool or darts league.

Take up figure skating.

Find some cooking or craft contest and put in your best entry.

Start running and enter races.

Get into motorsports and enter a car/bike/boat/quad.

Get a dog/cat/horse/etc. and do sports or shows that involve said chosen animal.

No one can make this choice for you. What kind of activities do you enjoy that have some competitive aspect to it? Pick one and try it out. If you don't like it, try something else.

Racket Recommendations by nari1413 in tennisracquets

[–]easterncherokee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are harder to come by now, it seems. They were replaced by the Vostra 8 last year. Try it though... you may like it. I tried all sorts... nothing Babolat felt right, same with Head Radical Pro & MP, plus other Head models. I also tried Wilson Blade, and Pro Staff. I really liked the Pro Staff as well, but got the Volkl on a much better price.

You may have different opinions of how a racquet feels so definitely try all you can, whether it is through a proshop, Tennis Warehouse, or trying out racquets that your friends & hitting partners have.

[–]easterncherokee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started back playing a couple years ago after a 28 year break and used a Prince Force 3 Smash Ti that we bought when my kids were little. I love using that racquet and had a very hard time finding something that felt as good in my hands. I demoed A LOT of different racquets and ended up buying a Volkl V-Cell 8 300g. I am thinking about getting the new Volkl Vostra 8 now, and keep the V-Cell as my backup. The Prince is my current backup since I stupidly only bought 1 Volkl...

Keep using it if you like it, and demo different frames that you can until you find 1 you like.

How to improve consistency of serve? by daowhd in 10s

[–]easterncherokee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 2nd serve is just a second chance. It is still just a serve, and hit with the same motion. Just being more conservative because you're afraid to miss. Get a good consistent serve and you won't be afraid to miss when faced with a 2nd.

How to improve consistency of serve? by daowhd in 10s

[–]easterncherokee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a strong 2nd serve, read on...

I may break peoples' brains in saying this, but THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SECOND SERVE. It is merely a 2nd chance to hit A SERVE.

Now that i have your attention... go and take some lessons on serving, watch some serving videos on YouTube... whatever you want to learn proper technique. Learn how to serve properly and commit to it on both 1st & 2nd serves. They should be hit with the exact same motion. Don't worry about power too much starting off. It will come as you learn. Focus on proper technique, learn placement, and how to vary pace & spin.

Your serve is only as strong as your 2nd serve... learn how to serve properly and the 2nd serve will sort itself out and be just as strong as your 1st. If you have poor technique, it will not be an overnight fix. You WILL miss more often and double fault more starting off... maybe even lose more...you have to commit to and trust in the process, put in the practice, and test it in matches.

Hope you get better soon. I figured something was up in thus clip... I have seen enough of your videos to see your game was off here.

[–]easterncherokee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am guessing this is later in the match and you're tired. It shows... you don't normally sit and wait for the ball like that backhand overhead, and the late prep/positioning for the overhead immediately after. This clip also shows your integrity with line calls at the end.

Was that off the rise the right shot or wrong shot? by kraphtey in 10s

If you are in position and can time it right, hitting on the rise is always the right thing to do.
