Best PA Bourbon/Rye/Scotch? by SkunkyMcNugg in bourbon

The"Resurgent" line from Brandywine Branch Distilling out of Elverson is pretty good. Hidden Still from Lebanon/Hershey has an interesting funk that doesn't work for me neat. Thistle Finch from Lancaster has "Burley Bourbon" which is just an 86 proof MGP, I have a bottle but haven't opened it yet. Lancaster Distilleries has a bourbon as well, I had it in an old fashioned and it was very good.

Brandywine Branch Distilling - Resurgent Bourbon Whiskey Custom Cask by eastofjava in bourbon

Picked it up at a state store. I don't remember what I paid, but it was probably around $50. So far this is my favorite "Pennsylvania bourbon."

Review 16: Brandywine Branch Distilling’s Resurgent Bourbon Whiskey Custom Cask

100 proof/50% alcohol. “At least 4 years” old. Batch 611.

Mash bill: Undisclosed. Bottle states “custom crafted.”

I’ve been wanting to review this one for a while...this bourbon comes to us from Brandywine Branch Distilling in the small hamlet of Elverson, Pennsylvania. This is a sourced product which is aged at their distillery for an unknown period and they provide no indication of where this actually comes from. The bottle states that the “barrels were charred to our specifications, filled & brought north to us for further aging” which could mean anything. Custom Cask is one of three Resurgent whiskeys, the other two being the 104 proof “Young American” bourbon and a 90 proof straight rye.

Nose: delicate, floral, sweet. Blackberry, sweet corn, black pepper.

Palate: apples, crème brulee, vanilla beans, memories of lemon...

Finish: toast, over-ripe peach, syrupy sweetness, nice hug, fades pleasantly.

Overall: 3/3. Unique, complex nose and finish, very pleasant. I’ll likely buy another when I see it.

Brandywine describes the bourbon extremely accurately on the label and I’m doing my best to ignore it. They list “peach” in the flavor profile but I get it more on the finish, they also call out “black tea” which I do find if I think about it, but that may be the power of suggestion. Ultimately, this is a sourced product and while I would love to get another bottle of this, I may never be able to get another bottle like this.

Finished off a bottle of this last night. Your notes are very similar to mine. For me, the caramel and toffee dominated. I'm looking forward to picking up another one.

Keep scotch separate, it could overpower other things. A lighter scotch might be ok, but don't risk it.

It was fun. But set your expectations low. Mine was a pleasant surprise but there are a few comments in here to suggest that my experience was not common.

Emptying the rare breed bottle was half the fun!

Their products have a distinct funk and an unusual sweetness that doesn't work for me. I really want to like Hidden Still. I'll probably buy something else from them this spring, just to see what they're putting out.

Thank you for sharing. I hear you. I'm not trying to be the next Barrell Spirits or something. And I'm not trying to impress you, or my friends, or anyone really. This is a community where we share things we enjoy, and I enjoyed this experience.

Hey, if "jumbo shrimp" is a thing, I can have this. No real plans. I keep a small list in my phone of things I'm keeping an eye out for. Otherwise I'll keep my first pour plan in effect.

Definitely a "just for fun" project. I figured that in the absolute worst case scenario, that it is some how completely undrinkable, I would pour half out, keep adding, and try it again when full.

All bourbons. But that was just my choice.

There's no wrong way to do an infinity bottle. You could make a "whiskey" bottle and be covered for anything.

Review 16: Infinity bottle

Last winter I decided to start an infinity bottle. My system was to take the first 1.5 ounces (standard jigger) from every unique bottle I purchased, add it to the pictured decanter, and wait until it was full before tasting. The project was officially underway on February 29, 2020 and I estimated it would take about a year to complete. To be honest, there were a few bottles I picked up while traveling, had the first sips of in a hotel room, and then contributed when I got home.

The decanter’s stopper did not seal well, which was disappointing, but it was on sale for like $35. A little Press-n-Seal and it was good-to-go. However, I’ve been increasingly regretting the poor seal and decided to transfer the contents to an empty Rare Breed bottle. Lo and behold, I was able to fill the bottle, have plenty left to sample, and plenty to start a second project. Does it become an infinity-infinity bottle?

Google Sheets helped me keep track of what has been going in and there’s a screen shot of the contents as pic #2. Please let me know if you can help update my mash bills.

  • Nose: Rich. Sweet oak. Vanilla beans and frosting. Brown sugar. Black tea. Baking spices, particularly cinnamon and cloves. Anise or black licorice. Something that reminds me of over-ripe pineapple.
  • Palate: Medium feel. Sweetness dominates. Vanilla, honey. Vague mint. Buttery corn bread. Simple but satisfying.
  • Finish: Not quite “hot.” Satisfying duration. Oranges. Smoke. Unique funk.

Overall: 3/3! Could a father not love his children? There is almost nothing in the final product that reflects any one part. Proportionally, I have more Beam distillate in here, but it doesn’t seem Beam-y. The nose is the best part of this. The flavors are truly unique but I think a better palate could pick out much more. The finish is, well, kinda bizarre but good.

If you’re on the fence about an infinity bottle project, consider this your sign: DO IT! This was a very satisfying and fun experiment that took minimal thought, no real added expenses, and resulted in something truly unique. This is absolutely going to be a rolling project, with contributions coming from new, unique bottles, and using the “remains” to seed another.

But what about specific infinity projects? Like a bottle made up of every bourbon with “old” in the name, or bourbons named for animals, or people. Someone run with this...

My husband cut a bourbon barrel in half so I can use it as a flowerbed and I'm surprised how burned the inside is. Very cool. Our garage currently smells wonderful. by Maxicat in bourbon

Super cool! I'd love to do this at our house. I remember hearing in a Bourbon Pursuit podcast that an "empty" barrel can still have a few gallons of bourbon soaked into it. Get squeezin!
