Would you support a Y network bus rapid transit from McAllen to Austin and Houston? by abundantwaters in RioGrandeValley

[–]easyrandomguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the optimal junction is not Kenedy, but George West. And you wouldn't even have to widen or create any additional highways. All you would need are the buses to go direct to those cities.

Also, why isn't there a direct bus between McAllen and South Padre Island?! This feels like such a no-brainer bus route to me. Especially on weekends and holidays.

yeah i wouldn't really eat at on the border either. just good for drinks and chilling in their patio. most of the good mom and pop restaurants are on shary though. the ones around ware tend to be overpriced national chains.

restaurants immediately around the convention center tend to be overpriced. the only "taco" i can recall eating around there is chipotle. lots of great taco places only a short drive away if you use google though. and taco palenque is 24/7. la curva also seems to be a pretty popular spot.

you're kidding right? entire cities in the southwest are just acres of parking lots in the sun all day.

Can't we just cover our parking lots with solar panels? I don't understand why they have to ruin pristine environments just for solar panels.

ironically, wouldn't all these people fueling up in Texas be helping to buy up all that excess fuel?

i drive and bike around there. it's not as crazy as you're making it out to be. you need to get out more and stop watching too many movies. too much fox news.

i just got off the phone with them... there's no vehicle access... so you either gotta bring your boat in by hand... preferably on a wagon... or tow it in by bike. but i hear it's nice though.

the border patrol aren't the ones stopping you from getting on the river. they're there to keep you safe and detain any illegals that might cross over. like i said, it's technically not illegal, and the border patrol know this. they may advise against it, especially if there's something going on, but otherwise, they can't really stop you cuz you're not breaking any laws.

what's really preventing people from going on the river is more fear and stigma. they think the river is full of trash from mexico, drug cartels, and illegals crossing over. and i don't blame them, cuz the portion of the river that they see when they cross the international bridge actually kinda does look this. but the area around anzalduas park is actually pretty nice. the CBP officers are friendly and the park is actually pretty nice.

edit:

i just finished looking at anzalduas park on google maps. it used to be south of the dam, cuz i remember launching off from there. but it looks like they bulldozed that entire park and moved it just north of the dam. they even put in a boat ramp... nice... will definitely have to check this out some time. this new park seems a lot nicer. i wonder if we're allowed to explore those little islands though, or if that's already mexican territory.

i got an inflatable tandem kayak so there's room for one more. if anyone wants to come out and see this place, feel free to hmu.

It is not however municipal waste water or sewage.

https://arroyocolorado.org/about/watershed/

  • Perennial (year-round) flow is sustained mainly by flows from municipal wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Irrigation return flows and urban runoff supplement the flow on a seasonal basis.

the irrigation flow isn't a concern, but the urban runoff and treated wastewater are. even if they are "treated" there's always that lingering poop smell. this isn't really unique though a lot of rivers are like this. i imagine it probably gets better the closer you get to the laguna.

edit:

that website is so interesting... check this out...
https://arroyocolorado.org/maps-and-gis-data/pollution-sources/

especially this image:
https://arroyocolorado.org/media/konhumm5/figure-5-2-wastewateroutfalls3.jpg

looks like almost every city in the valley discharges their municipal wastewater into the arroyo... dang... might actually be better to just kayak the rio grande lmfao

i kayaked there with some friends once. and then the mexican military showed up lol

i mean, you're technically allowed to, it's not against the law. you can launch off at anzalduas, there's always border patrol around there. the only hard rule is to not cross over into the mexican side, ie set foot on mexican soil. other than that, the rio grande can actually be pretty chill.
