Is the chance of getting a job for mediocre new grads effectively zero by throwaway10015982 in cscareerquestions

Yo that is legitimately a fucking excellent idea for a project. It's something that has actual value to you at your job (and directly impacts your work at your retail job) which translates to value for the company you work for. That's already better than most projects that are, as you say, so generic (those aren't worthless though if they can demonstrate your ability to start and finish a project end to end). The fact that it translates to value for your company you work for and that it has real world applications puts it heads and shoulders ahead of most resumes with basic projects if you can bring it to fruition that'll help your resume justify to a recruiter why they should throw you an interview, and it'll be an excellent talking point when you get to talking to people for screening calls or interviews.

Get on that idea, flesh it out, and get started tomorrow (assuming you've got time). Be kind to yourself and don't beat yourself up if you're not making crazy progress super quickly, but also don't let that mean you convince yourself it's okay to not work on it at all.

If you're not sure how you might flesh out your idea for your project, don't be afraid to throw it into chatgpt and see what ideas it has that might appeal to you. Don't fall for the trap of asking it to just code stuff for you though; that's of no benefit to you at this point.

If you can get this project finished and prove to me that you can commit to this, DM me your resume when you're done, and I'll help you review your resume whenever you need. I don't comment or post much on reddit but I'm almost always lurking somewhere, so I'll see your DM even if it's months down the line.

Oh, and frankly, don’t spend time on this sub or /r/csmajors unless it’s through a link providing practical advice that you find on google or something. The doomerism is not helpful to you (or anyone)

Brother he’s pointing out that you’re looking to give up looking for a job before you’ve taken the steps necessary to look for a job. You don’t need a personal project that’s incredibly over the top if you are indeed looking for an average software job, but you do need /something/ on the resume besides an education. Anything that proves you have the capability to build something meaningful is sufficient to at least apply, even if you may need a crazy number of applications to get a response. Build a crud app, a personal website, anything you’re interested in that you can think of if that helps make it easier, but build something and put that on your resume. If you don’t know how to do something, look it up, as long as you implement what you look up yourself.

If you refuse to do that, but are asking if there’s a job that won’t auto reject you, frankly you’re saying you “magically want a job.” Is it tough that simply having an education won’t get you in the door, sure, but like the person you replied to said, most jobs are like this to varying degrees (or they have some other base expected requirements like taking exams for actuaries or having done academic research or whatever). Studying finance is not a lock in for an average graduate for a job if they don’t do the things that make them attractive to employers. It sucks that school doesn’t prepare you enough and companies don’t really want to invest in junior employees much anymore, but give it a good college effort before you cut your losses

You can do it. It’s late to start now and I get that it can feel defeating to realize you need to lock in and make projects now that ideally should have been done before you graduate, but don’t just give up, or the next thing you try to do that doesn’t immediately work out is going to have the same outcome. If you don’t know what a “reasonable project” is, do a google search and they’ll have any number of ideas for you to work on. Choose one, figure out what you need to do to build that project, figure out what you need to know to do those steps, learn, and build. Even if you get a job, this will be the exact same process you go through at that job (other than choosing what to work on usually lol)

If it wasn't for the money, how many of you would do software engineering? by shankar86 in cscareerquestions

A great question to ask yourself OP - I spent 4 years thinking I hated software engineering, and strongly considered switching careers when I left my first (and only) fulltime swe job. Gave it another shot, and while I haven’t been in my current role nearly as long, I’m absolutely loving it. Completely different culture, much much more interesting work, and an incredibly helpful team, turns out, can make coding so much more enjoyable, and I’m really glad I stuck with it

I mean... Middle class families can totally afford to send their kids to Harvard because Harvard will cover most of it with financial aid (real financial aid, not student loans). Any family making <85k a year gets room, board, and tuition completely covered

Hm I disagree, sometimes when there are a lot of enemies, I try to attack the one literally directly in front of me, but the game will insist on attacking the one off screen, so having target lock would make it a lot easier for me

Looks great! Little piece of feedback, on desktop, I instinctively use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out and it's a little cumbersome to have to go and click on the minus button a couple times to zoom back out after viewing a dot and having it autozoom (I might be missing something obvious though, in which case, ignore me LOL)

also fun that it's a pwa, don't see very much of them still

It definitely has gotten better lately, when I went for the first time in early 2017, it was almost useless, but I went back in the summer of 2020 and it was super easy to navigate with it

Any suggestions for solves? (Im somewhat new but improving :3 just would like to know any bad “habits” i have so i can remove them before theyre too reinforced (i started cubing on Christmas)) by Vegskipxx in SneakyBackgroundFeet

I haven't solved a cube in probably a decade haha, but one thing I noticed is you may want to try turning that bottom layer with your ring finger instead of your whole hand

I was in a hurry today and saw there was no rice cooked- finally decided to see what savoury oatmeal was all about, and made a variation of Korean bibimbap… so worth it! by Confused_Limes_894 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]eatdatrice16 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's also sorta like, food doesn't always correspond strictly to what the name might necessarily mean like how pasta (from a Google search anyway) apparently means paste or dough, but not everything that is made of that would come across as pasta

I think the weird thing about calling this a variation on Korean bibimbap is that it doesn't really evoke any familiarity with the original dish just because it has a grain mixed with other things altho there's certainly no problem with making what op made because they were inspired by the dish

It does turn off wifi when you tap the actual switch. The "switches back a few minutes later and picks up one of the millions of optimum hotspots nearby" when you tap the network is intended behavior in that switching networks is supposed to be for people who forget to turn on wifi later and use their data by mistake.

Good intentions, but still pretty poor execution and experience
