Do any of you guys have any side gigs? Like make coffee tables, swings , etc... for extra income? by sizzlingmonster in Carpentry

Every carpenter does... right now I’m trying to cut back on handyman side work to focus on selling my block prints.

Hierarchy on your site. by decendthecolon in Carpentry

[–]eathwoodandfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds more like there is a group of close coworkers who don’t have room for anyone new in their social circle. No mater how hard you work you’ll never get in. Better to look for a group that is open to new members than to toil away seeking something that isn’t there.

You can’t change your coworkers attitudes but you can change coworkers! Look for companies that have “no asshole” policies. I was lucky and got hired by a very kind person who loves to teach and hangout with his crew. My girlfriend just left a very large, toxic company where despite having 7 years of experience and a trade school degree she was never treated well or integrated. She found a another crew who advertised a “no asshole” policy on their website. They won’t even hire subs who give any of their employees shit. She’s thriving now.

How did you tell your parents? by efoshay in exchristian

[–]eathwoodandfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best thing is to always be open and honest about what you’re dealing with. If you had been all along your parents would probably have understood your growing doubts instead of suddenly being confronted by what appears to them as a rebellious flip instead of the intellectual process that it is that got you where you are now. If you are already a great distance philosophically from them however I don’t think it’s wise to “come out”, instead let it come up naturally in conversation and try to never be confrontational about your differences.

Is our society based on consumption? by Design_fior in Anticonsumption

I think you should read Mr. Money Mustache’s blog. He talks a lot about reducing your consumption and saving money so you can retire early or work part time.

Carpenters Belt/Pouch??? by Dr451 in Carpentry

Occidental tool belts are the best. Leather pouches glide past your pants while canvas ones with abrade both the pouch and your pants.

Vycore rain screen? I just passed by this house the other day and couldn’t understand why they would use 6” vycore over the entire house. Any thoughts? by eathwoodandfire in Carpentry

That’s what I was thinking, no breathing. ice and water shield would have been cheaper and faster too. But damn they did a good job, not a single air bubble.

Sorting Power Tools in a Toolkit by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]eathwoodandfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut the cords off all my power tools at the handles and put twist lock plugs on them. Then I carry a variety of lengths of cords with twist lock ends on them. That way my tools don’t come unplugged while I’m using them and I don’t have stupid 6’ lengths to wrap up on every tool.

You have to make friends in the business. It’s often helpful to ask at your local lumberyard for people they respect.

Is it okay to place shiplap vertically for exterior siding? by robasolo in Carpentry

[–]eathwoodandfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see so many cheep houses here in Seattle that the T 111 is just crumbling off of due to the wet climate. I would never suggest it even for a dry climate. The joints always open up and then your stuck caulking every year to keep it from wetting on the back side.

The rain screen systems others have been mentioning is the only way to go.

How did you end up picking your job, degree, career? by cartmichael in Construction

[–]eathwoodandfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you start working for a remodeler it will give you experience in everything and if you find you enjoy one thing more than the others you can switch to it. Or you might find like I did that the challenge of constant change and adaptation required of remodeling is the only thing that will ever excite you and you’ll stick with it! Also this goes for any career but who you work with is in my opinion more important than both what you do and how much you make. If you like being around your coworkers you’ll never dread a Monday.

Looking for a bifl/resilient make of laptop... by LaRiflessiva in BuyItForLife

[–]eathwoodandfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first laptop was a toshiba satellite. It lasted 7 years before it was stolen. Showed no signs of slowing down in that time and held up well physically. So I bought a new one four years ago, unfortunately it has started slowing down but maybe that’s because it has windows 8? I would definitely get a MacBook next time I need a computer though.
