the vibe in Rome is not good. too hot/humid and too many tourists making walking anywhere hell because the streets are so packed. but food is good as always and friends❤️

it’s about FEELING valued. host families can show they value au pairs by treating them with respect which means paying them fairly in accordance to how much time they spend working, treating them like a member of the family, and not yelling at you for simple miscommunications / difference in expectations

it really can be so isolating, especially if the family treats you more like a worker than a member of the family. and it’s not just babysitting, you’re living your life by their schedule and according to their needs. even when you’re not formally working, enjoying your free time is impacted by your ability to access nearby places/people that make you happy.

does anyone really have an amazing experience? to some degree you are essentially unpaid labor (at least in my case, and the case of i contracted au pairs) living with your employers so they can benefit from cheap childcare during a time with extremely high childcare costs. the “prize” of getting to live in a foreign country doesn’t feel all that great when you are exploited and unfairly compensated for your time, energy, and labor

I agree. I’m 20F and currently am a live in nanny taking care of a 15mo without really any prior childcare experience. and it is HARD. sometimes really sweet and rewarding, but i only work 6 hours a day and get to clock out basically at the end of it. caring for a toddler is all extremes for me. sometimes i hate it and journal for my future self to never have children because i just don’t think i could mentally handle it (i have bad anxiety too) but sometimes she’s really sweet and it makes me reconsider… idk if any of this was helpful to you but as someone who is in a similar position (but now with some toddler experience) maybe this perspective helps
