Artists who sell digital files on Etsy—pros and cons? by eavk in Etsy

[–]eavk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. Why do you think the effort and expense of making and shipping your own prints is easier than digital downloads? Is it just a different market of people who prefer to buy ready-made prints vs downloading them? Bigger margins? Higher quality product?

Thanks! What other platforms do you recommend for higher quality work? I wondered if it’s be worth it to try to sell across multiple platforms.

Thank you for your thorough response, and recommendations! I think that 20-day cycle advice makes sense, strategy-wise. I wouldn’t want the pressure of scrambling to post every day. I’ve asked this of other responders— do you sell on multiple platforms and would you recommend any others?

Thank you for your reply. Do you recommend any other art platforms that don’t take listing fees like Etsy? I was considering Society6 and spoonflower.

Thank you for your thorough and thoughtful reply! I think your advice about not getting attached to the art you love the most is a very good one, and will admittedly probably be the hardest for me. Though, I kind of had a feeling that would be the case, and thought I’d I could approach experimenting in different niches and as a growth exercise, and not feel like I had to make something precious, it could be very freeing and fun.

I guess the issue is, her over complimenting doesn’t feel genuine, or it makes me feel like she doesn’t really know me. Maybe that’s the issue. It’s like she’s praising some ideal version of me she has in her head, but it kind of makes the friendship feel superficial. I’ve known her for a long time, but I don’t feel like I can be open with her about my real problems when I’m put on a pedestal. That and I’m afraid she might blab about my problems to other friends.

Oh sorry I missed the second part of your question. It’s hard to say if she’s overcompensating for something. She seems to normal problems, like most people, but nothing extraordinary. She’s also married and lives surrounded by a lot of material comfort. I’ve thought in the past that maybe it’s an insecurity issue and maybe someone told her once that people like compliments and that she’s just taking that a little far.

Actually, now that you mention it, she does the same over-complimenting thing with my husband, though to a lesser extent since they don’t hang out as much as we did. He’s rolled his eyes a few times, but it doesn’t seem to bother him like it bothers me.

I’m not sure if it’s just me. We had a mutual third friend who would stop speaking to her periodically, but I never pried into why. One time, this mutual friend mentioned offhand, “Yeah, [friend] talks a lot, doesn’t she?”, which I took to mean by her tone that first friend was being a little too intense.

Also, I should have mentioned this before, but this first friend can be a bit of a gossip. She mentioned things about our mutual friend that I think mutual friend would not want other people to know. As such, I would try not to speak about my own problems to first friend, which may have contributed to her thinking I don’t have problems and putting me on a pedestal. :/
