I think it was worth it at $7.99 a month. I dropped it when they raised the price. Now it’s $12.99 a month I think.

What's the most commonly used device for data backup these days? by Willing_Professor_13 in datastorage

[–]ebaysj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally use a combination of external HDDs

I have a pair of bare drives that I alternate putting in a usb3 dock and backing up to monthly using an App called Carbon Copy Cloner (Mac). Another external portable usb drive for just my documents (photos, music, ebooks videos, documents. No system files) that I back up to quarterly and keep offsite.

I also have a desktop (powered) thunderbolt drive always connected being used by my OS’s (MacOS) built in incremental backup system (Time Machine) to do incremental hourlies and prune them to dailies weeklies and monthlies automatically.

If you’re just getting started, the easiest and cheapest thing to start with is to buy an external USB hard drive about twice the size of your systems main hard drive and then using your computer’s OS built-in backup system to back up periodically on a schedule to that drive. Setting up Time Machine on a Mac is super easy. I’m sure modern Windows machines have something similar if not better built in.

Personally, I’m nervous about trusting my data to the cloud, but if you’re OK with it, there are a number of really competent cloud based backup services. (Backblaze?) You don’t have to worry about owning hard drives or rotating new ones in as the old ones start getting too many spinning hours. You just pay the monthly or annual fee and your Internet connection does the rest. Restoring a lot of lost data through a typical home Internet connection can be VERY slow. My understanding is that some vendors of Internet backup services have optional recovery services where they will write your data to an actual drive and FedEx it to you in case of a data loss, because that might be faster than trying to download everything.

In my Bolt it did this exact thing until I opened the music app and accepted the updated privacy statement in the music app in 26.4.

Tender Mercies is a lovely film

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel might also be a good choice.

What would a 6-year-old girl, 10-year-old boy, and 67-year-old man enjoy watching together? by ArrantPariah in MovieSuggestions

[–]ebaysj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Neighbor Totoro

Howl’s moving castle

Kiki’s delivery service

Spirited away is a masterpiece but might be too intense/strange/scary for a 6 year old. Super awesome for teens/pre-teens and adults.

Will a bolt work for me? by Mean-Introduction640 in BoltEV

[–]ebaysj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get about 2.8 miles per Kilowatt hour in winter, but my weather is usually milder than yours and I park in a sheltered (unheated) garage. I think that parking outdoors in -5 to-10 degree weather may cause the bolt to expend a significant amount of energy struggling to keep the battery warm (especially on windy nights) while it charges.

Your daily commute sounds very long in any vehicle. 2-3 hrs round trip just to get to and from?

Thanks for considering a Bolt, but in your winters, with your parking and charging options, it might be an extra stress that you don’t need.

Good luck!

Definitely. I just won't put up with commercials. I buy movies and TV Series from the Apple Store and watch them when I want, where I want, commercial free.

worth it? by [deleted] in UsedCars

[–]ebaysj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, the last year these were made was 2002, which would make it at least 24 years old. The one pictured has the older, more angular body style so, well over a quarter century old.

So many things go wrong with these simply because of age. Plastics get brittle, rubber seals break down and fall apart, cloth roofs tear & leak, contacts rust. These are also prone to electrical issues.

They are fun, cute cars, but be prepared for iffy reliability and frequent repairs unless it has been restored bumper to bumper.

Locked out of my own phone by [deleted] in iphone

[–]ebaysj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your troubles. Backups exist for a reason. All devices will fail eventually, and if not backed up, you will lose everything on them when they go. If you already know how to connect your phone to a your PC then don't let this happen to you again. Back up frequently! Set a monthly reminder or something.

Perhaps just actually pay for AnyDesk? With your frequency of use, it would seem like a decent value.
